• Compuer Build - SATA Cables

I am going to build myself a server in a SilverStone SST-CS380 V2 case
using a Gigabyte Z68X-UD5-B3 motherboard that I though I had lost but
    found in a tidy up!

I detest latched SATA cables after a horrendous experience where I
destroyed a beautiful Lian-Li case because the cables wouldn't un-latch.

My search is throwing up latched cables with many un-latched cables shown
as no longer available and the suggested alternative is latched.

Anybody know a supplier of un-latched cables they can recommend or just suppliers generally so I can do some research?

    Many thanks.

My advice would be to stick with latched cables and fix problems without destroying cases...

There are multiple connector combinations for SATA cables.
Here is a cable without latches.

    # This is the WRONG one, a lefty with cable-go-up.

    https://www.startech.com/en-us/search?search_term=SATA18LA1
    https://www.startech.com/en-us/cables/sata18la1

    # This is the NORMAL one, a righty with cable-go-down.

    https://www.startech.com/en-us/cables/sata18ra1

There used to be a web page with some well-lit pictures of
cable ends, but I guess all we get today is YT. Some people
should just hire a helper to make a video for them :-/

"SATA cable ( Difference between Right angle and Left Angle cable )"

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_Yz1GJCM-k

    On another web page:

"A right angled cable points downward from the drive.

A left angled would point upward, nice for cable management."

Personally, I buy bricks&mortar store cables, I stand in front
of a wall of cables, and stare at them until I'm convinced I
have the item for the job. Buying online I would feel less sure
of what I was getting myself into.

That company would be an expensive way to buy cables. The purpose of
me showing them as pictures, is to prove they still distribute
    compression-only connectors without the latch.

There are various corner cases where the latch is a bad idea.
A first gen mobo with SIL3112 chip to enable usage of SATA drives,
the vertical connector provided on the motherboard is poor for
any purpose. Using a latch cable in that case, could result
in the connector body being ripped right off the motherboard.
The Data connector bodies lacked "wings" so they could be
swaged to the motherboard for support.

There are some drives, where the plastic is missing where the latch
might engage. But this means the latch is also slightly easier
to remove. On such a drive, you will also notice there is no
surface suited to pressing-against to remove the connector, so
generally this situation is not a desirable one. I/m only mentioning
this if you had a "now this is weird..." experience and sought
validation from another user. Yes, there is one drive that is
    less-than-nice during cable removal.

    Don't I know it, thanks Paul :-)

I found Lindy's website in the end and ordered a dozen straight ended and
half a dozen each of right angle and left angle, all without catches. I'll finalise with a link when they have arrived and I can confirm they fit the bill.

    reasonable price, supplier:
