I've had a EV since April, up to today 2002 kWh to charge it (at 7p) so
    140 Quid

    6350 Miles, so 2.2 p/mile

It works out at an average of 3.17 Miles/kWH, which seems about right,
Summer months each journey was about 3.6 to 4.2, at present they are 2.6
    to 3.2

Never charged anywhere other than at home, until today that is, just
about to do a 200 mile round trip, so, depending on the consumption I
get on the way, I'll need to top up a little bit (hoping for about 20
    kWh) to get back.

It wont. The key is whether it is displaying a wifi-calling icon - a
    telephone handset with radio waves..

This rather misses the point I was making.
Wifi calling works on my phone - but the phone is still expending energy trying to-a maintain a link to the nearest cell tower - despite the fact that it already has this reliable connection to the network via wifi calling.
It is that waste of effort, energy, and battery life that I want to put
    a stop to.
    Ah. I see.

    'airplane mode'?

Airplane mode should stop it searching for mobile signal ...

Thinking about what "Airplane mode" was intended to do, when engaged it
ought to stop _all_ radio transmissions from the phone. That would mean
no wifi calling (or wifi anything).

On a reasonably modern phone wifi calling, roaming and other wireless connectivity uses a tiny proportion (maybe 1%?) of a phone's battery.

I used 1,450 kWh last month at an average cost of 11p per kWh plus -u16
    standing charge.

    Tim

    So letrCOs do some numbers:

    1450kWh @ 11p + -u16 = -u176pm energy costs

No - that's the total consumption. If you're going to do some numbers you need
    to use the correct numbers.

Cost of panels, battery, heat pump, insulation iro -u30,000

Loss of interest on capital = -u1200pa or -u100pm

    Income from exports -u85pm

    Net costings pm

    Outgoing/losses

    -u176 + -u100 =-u276

    Income -u85

Source? Seems high, based on my experience. But it varies hugely, dependent on
array, consumption, generation, and export rate.

    Total cost pm = -u276 - -u85 = -u191

Which is exactly my monthly outgoings for gas and electricity including
    running an EV.

So where is the payback for your capital expenditure?

    Even worse:

Any decent ISA roboinvestor will earn you 12% tax free, so your losses on
capital could be -u3600pa or -u300pm, dwarfing your energy costs.

Not 'will' - might. 2% to 5% is much more likely -

    https://investor.vanguard.com/investor-resources-education/article/understanding-robo-advisor-performance

Perhaps you shouldnrCOt have invested in electricity.

You are completely missing the cost savings and consumption of the EV. And to do this type of calculation properly, before you do the numbers, you also need
to discount the cash flows and add a sinking fund.

What is the depreciation on an EV?
Whenever 'cost savings' of 'renewable energy' are touted it always seems
to boil down to either massive subsidies or cherry-picking what is
included and what, more importantly, is left out...
