I wonder if that's why that my mac started the other day telling me that it
has "just" been updated to 26.2? It hasn't. I did it weeks ago.

Can't say I've ever seen this delayed notification behaviour.

Maybe updating to 26.3 will sort it out? Maybe in Recovery Mode?

Thinking about it, use of a full installer rather than using the standard delta style method would replace the current OS more or less completely and hopefully sort things out. If done correctly it wouldnrCOt harm the Data volume which you probably backup anyway via TM, say. If you want to stick with 26.2 then I guess the App Store would only offer 26.3.

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 26.3 should work but maybe not 26.2 as discussed here.

    However Mr Macintosh should oblige.

Thanks for the suggestions, however, this is a work managed machine. I
    doubt it'll work.

I honestly doubt it. Your system volume is cryptographically protected
against modification (see the articles at eclecticlight.co) so if one
upgrade produces different results the crypto check will fail and cause
    the Mac to not boot.

    Yup. The update fixed it.
