I wish to open an app called Caprine. Some of you may know it as an
alternative to Meta's now defunct Messenger.app on the iMac.

But iMacOS won't let me because it can't verify it. I know it s possible to override this, and before Tahoe I knew how. But either I have forgotten or it has changed. And I can't find the answer in Help/Tips.

    Anyone know the trick?

System Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Security

You should that app awaiting attention.

Also, if an app you wish to use is not Notarized, the following
Terminal command should allow it always open. Obviously it is
    potentially dangerous with dodgy apps!

    xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Caprine.app

I'd argue that anything to do with Meta is automatically "dodgy".

While this is true, Caprine has been used for some time by one of my sons as
an alternative to the now defunct Messenger.app. It is a third party app that
I presume uses the Messenger API. He has suffered no ill effects.

Should you want to follow in my footsteps, be sure to remove Messenger.app first!

I and my family use Messenger to keep in touch, and it's very good for this. But the website is pits, even with FBPurity installed. And of course Meta
could kill the API any time it wanted.

IMHO you could argue that all social media are "dodgy".

I use FaceTime and iMessage here but out of interest I downloaded Caprice
and found that the xattr command made it runnable.

Thank you. I can now run Caprine; getting it to work is a problem which I
    have yet to solve.

All fine now. I had a problem because Messenger.ap0 was still installed.
