IrCOve bought the missus a new iPad (basic 2025 A16 model), and want to use
the old one for the grandkids to play with.

I have a rCygrandkidsrCO child account setup on my family sharing already, so they have a separate profile for the AppleTV.

The iPad is an old base model 5, on iOS 16. I have reset and erased the
iPad ready for a new start.

IrCOve tried every which way I can to get this working on the child account, but to no avail. The setup process just doesnrCOt follow any of the processes
I find on Apple help, or any online tutorials I can find. This does seem to
be something that doesnrCOt rCOjust worksrCO, and is a pile of crap.

IrCOve tried the Quick Setup process, using my iPad Pro as the source, and selecting the child account for the iPad. That picks up the fuzzy cloud
code ok, then tries to setup the device, but then just gets stuck in both devices waiting for the other to complete. I have tried leaving that for
over an hour, and gave up.

IrCOve tried manually setting up, but none of that works either. If I try to login using the child account, I just get an incorrect password error from iCloud (it isnrCOt incorrect).

So then I tried logging in as myself, but that introduces its own issues,
for some reason I canrCOt complete logging into the iCloud account. It asks
for my iPhone passcode, which it also says is incorrect - it isnrCOt.

IrCOve tried setting screen time, as suggested in many places, but nothing there is setting this thing up for the kids to use with restrictions.

ItrCOs a frustrating mess. All I want to do is set the thing up with a
handful of games and edu apps. It doesnrCOt even need to be on the internet (indeed, better if it wasnrCOt).

Any suggestions before this gets launched at a wall.

    Cheers.

Nothing constructive I'm afraid; just an expression of sympathy. I've just
been moving a child's account to a new (s/h) iphone, and just signing out of the old phone was unbelievably frustrating. ScreenTime was involved, and none of the 'correct' methods worked to remove the restriction on signing out. I can't even remember what worked in the end; it was definitely in 'wave a dead chicken' territory.

    It's a mess.

It is indeed, I left it overnight, and now IrCOve been able to login and set the thing up on the kids account.

Perhaps it just needed time to fully reset everything after IrCOd done the
    full factory reset process.

    Cheers

Glad to hear yourCOve talked it down from the ledge, Andy!

ItrCOs a classic Apple frustrationrCoit often isn't the hardware, but the iCloud servers taking a "coffee break" while trying to propagate the
reset across your Family Sharing group. Sometimes the digital paperwork
just takes 24 hours to clear.

Since you're running an iPad 5 in 2026, a couple of "pro-tips" to keep
your sanity intact with the grandkids:

The "Older Version" Trick: You'll likely find some newer apps demand iOS
17 or 18. If the iPad 5 (stuck on 16) refuses to download them,
"purchase" the app on your new iPad first. Then, go to the App Store
Purchased section on the old iPad; it should then offer you a "Download
    a compatible version" prompt.

Performance Boost: That A9 chip is a senior citizen now. To keep it
snappy for games, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and
flip it to OFF. It saves a surprising amount of overhead.

Guided Access: If you haven't already, look at Settings > Accessibility
Guided Access. It lets you "lock" the iPad into a single app with a
triple-click of the Home buttonrCoessential for preventing grandkids from accidentally deleting your emails or changing the language to Mandarin.

    Cheers!
