• What to do with a very old iPad?

They have beautiful, bright, high-resolution displays, and even if they're not really suited to day-to-day use, it's shame not to use them for something.

This is what you can do: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/idd57m0uri3yfic1zkg51/AAuClbM6nyORjbirItZiMb4?dl=0&e=3&rlkey=aglrdzy9oziceqo95twg2b53z

Get an A4-ish picture frame (I've used ones from IKEA). You can get rid of the glass (usually it's some kind of plastic nowadays anyway). I ask my local
frame shop to cut a mount for me.

It needs to be cut to exactly the right size, so that it just clears the
    button and the camera/sensor.

You need to stiffen the mount, because an iPad is much heavier than a picture or photograph. I use a couple more layers of mounting card, that also creates
a recess that holds the iPad firmly in place. I also glue some card around the inner edges of the frame to hold it tightly in place.

I make a notch in the back plate for the cable, and use little tabs of card to lock the back plate in place.

I've included pictures of my new one with my new iPad 4, and an older one that I made a few years ago, with an iPad 3 (not sure why the photo looks so lurid there, it looks perfectly normal in the flesh).

The only problem is the risk of having to deal with a Usenet misery-guts, who fortunately doesn't impinge on me in any other way.

I should have added: for now at least iOS 9 and 10 can still access a shared Photos folder from iCloud, so it's easy to add new photographs to the slideshows on them.

Thanks - excellent idea. Saved for future reference. Now wondering if I could make a gallery of miniatures with various ancient iPhones, but the power consumption would get a bit silly...

Friend of mine uses an ancient iPad to view the images
from a network camera. (or its built in SD card)
    It controls the camera, actually.

Since the connetion is by ethernet and WiFi
there is no problem with age or forced obsolescence.

(the iPad has more than enough pixels for the cam)
