    Apart from this venerable group are there other groups that remain active and have a good signal:noise ratio. As a guide, apart from Macs I'm interested in books, music, good whisky and film photography.

    The groups I subscribe to that are active are...

    * uk.rec.sheds
    * uk.tech.broadcast
    * comp.sys.mac.***
    * rec.arts.sf.***

    I subscribe mostly to this group nowadays. The com.sys.mac.* groups seem to
    be increasingly in need of noise abatement so I rarely even read them.
    uk.d-I-y is a handy tips group and is less troubled by trolls than say a
    couple of years ago.

    Talking of whisky I had an interesting tour of a new-ish English whisky distillery the other day - fortunately I wasnrCOt driving!

    Merry Christmas :)

    I hesitate to say it, but you could try alt.usage.english
    It has evolved into a general talk forum,
    with users from all over the world.
    It is sometimes somewhat related to usage, but 'grammar-nazi's
    are completely absent.
    The noise level is fairly low, because trolls are generally ignored.

    Peculiarites: There are RRs who have been there 'forever',
    smiley-snobbery is the norm, as is sometimes absurd free association,
    and deliberate mis-reading whatever can be misread.
    Commandment: Thou shalst not be boring.

    The threads last almost forever,
    and subject headers are rarely changed,
    so they have usually no relation to what is being discussed.
    Different parts of the same thread may be completely unrelated.

    And beware of being hit by low-flying puns,

    I _do_ enjoy a distillery tour! Unfortunately the new 'vertical' distillery closest to my home is a bit dull inside - it had the appearance of a generic chemical plant.

    That reminds me. I do need to go to the new Macallan visitor's centre.

    She's not a fan of the single malts which I prefer!
    Highland Park was a favourite of mine.
