This study was a gene knockout study using CRISPR to knock out genes in
stem cells to see how they developed into neurons with the defect. They identified hundreds of genes that had something to do with nueral
development.
The research article is paywalled, but they found 8 genes with major
effects and studied one PEDS1 in detail. It turns out that PEDS1 is
involved in mess ups in neuro development in children. A deficiency in
PEDS1 in mice accelerated cell-cycle exit and messed up neuronal differentiation and migration. It reduces brain size. Chimps have a functional PEDS1 gene, so any difference would be expected to be regulatory.
