They aren't releasing the genotype, and they haven't figured how the
patient was infected.-a The patient remains hospitalized.-a They claim
that the patient entered the hospital in early November.-a Sounds like
D1.1 in terms of severity of symptoms.

There have only been 3 other human infections (dairy worker and two
poultry workers) detected in 2025 because they stopped testing dairy
workers even though they knew that a lot of them were being infected.

The infection has been confirmed and it is claimed to be H5N5 and sounds
like a reassorted virus with H5N1 ancestry. Genotype D1.1 is still
classified as H5N1 even though its N1 gene comes from a North American
avian flu strain. It still has the Asian H5 lineage.

The Washington patient is seriously ill and may have gotten infected by
    his backyard flock.

Avian flu has devastated Southern elephant seals. Half the population
of the largest breeding group is gone. The news article only calls it
high path AI, but other articles have claimed that the Southern elephant
seals were being infected by H5N1.

More avian flu infections in flocks in 4 states. Indiana claims 20
infections in just one county within the last month. 83 confirmed
infected flocks in the US in just the last 30 days. So many flocks in
one county probably means that there is a human connection with the infections. Someone is taking the virus to these farms. Either shared workers and equipment or something like feed trucks. Most commercial
farms disinfect the feed trucks before they are allowed onto the farm,
and some of them don't allow the trucks onto the farm, and have the feed delivered through the farm fence. I don't know how long the virus might
be infectious if the feed was being contaminated at the feed mill. Most salmonella flock infections are due to contaminated feed.

There have been 47 backyard flock infections in the last 30 days, and
all the owners are possible victims of infection. With the last hospitalization of a backyard flock owner (earlier this month) the CDC
and USDA should be increasing their warnings and advisories to backyard
flock owners that they are in real danger of contracting a deadly form
of avian influenza. They need to tell them what to look out for and to
get their flocks tested and minimize contact if they see symptoms.

145,000 flu hospitalizations in Japan in just one week. The fastest

that the major viral strain infecting Japan is not well matched with the current vaccine. We might be using the same vaccine strains that WHO recommended. They just picked wrong again. The previous articles

The CDC is getting worried about the efficacy of the latest flu vaccine because of the new strain that seems to be infecting people this season.
They may have guessed even more wrong than last season ineffective
vaccine. This is a time when we need the mRNA vaccine backup, so that
the vaccine can include the new sequences needed to be effective.

I do not understand why the CDC and USDA are not stepping up their
guidance for dealing with avian influenza. The people with backyard
birds need to be warned about what to look out for, and to reduce
contact when their birds start showing symptoms. They need to get their
birds tested as soon as possible. This is the first case of H5N5 human infection and it resulted in a fatality. There have only been around a
dozen D1.1 H5N1 human infections and they resulted in 3
hospitalizations, 2 went critical, and one patient died. This is so
much worse than human adapted influenza A that we do not want these
viral strains evolving to adapt to human to human transmission.

The new CDC deputy director is anti vaccine and was a Trumpy advocate
for ivermectin that people overdosed on, but that wasn't effective
    against Covid.

It is probably a good thing that they chose wrong again for the flu
vaccine strains, so vaccination isn't likely to be as effective as it
could be, because this guy isn't going to do much to decrease the
severity of influenza season by hyping vaccination. What we could have
used was an mRNA vaccine that matched the virus that is causing most of
the issues this flu season, but RFK killed the program.
