This year again, NHL players are in the olympics, well, except for the
Russian one, apparently the OAC is OK with the SOBUSA even though they
are attacking Venezuela, Greenland, Cuba, Canada and I forget who else.

Cool sports (arent they all cool?) like Mens Hockey, ski jumping and
    Bobsled start tomorrow or later.
But for now you can watch the Curling, I think the big match today is
between Italy and Britain. Chick hockey is on now too.

Standings at the moment based on the Gold standard.

Yes, how exactly did they advance to the quarters?

    Format
    -------
The ten teams are split into two groups of five teams each, in which
they play against each team once. All teams from Group A and the
top-three ranked teams from Group B advance to the quarterfinals. A
knockout system will be used after the group stage.

    ------------

Hmm... an astute UPT gamemaster should take notes on how to organize a competition if he wanted some teams to advance and some teams to be
    held back...

Very respectable performance that doesnrCOt reflect
too badly on our hockey league (where the two South
Tyrolean teams which provide the bulk of the Italian NT
play, next to two from Hungary, one from Slovenia, and
    eight from Austria)

Hope Damian Clara isnrCOt injured too badly, with
performances like today he might actually one day
become the first Italy-born and raised player* to
feature in the NHL, even though previously the
consensus had been that his career has stalled a bit in
    Sweden.

best - not the Mickey Mouse "Worlds" that don't include the best

Still, the IIHF and IOC will be happy as the viewing figures for

I will have to find another channel to watch it on though as the

CBC Gem at best is a terrible app. It really has a lot of little issues
and some big issues but now that there might actually be a couple of

But it ends 6-5 for Germany. I got the feeling that the Italians had
an English speaking manager, probably Canadian. He got his tactics all

ice pitch. I am going to say it. I hope the Swiss win this game.

Fun fact: itrCOs even smaller than an NHL rink.

After the first day of proper international hockey, i.e best on
best - not the Mickey Mouse "Worlds" that don't include the best
hockey players in the world. (As they are busy elsewhere at that
time of year.) It seems the likely winner of the Olympic Gold
medal will be one of the NHL nations. Neither of them looked to
be playing in top gear yesterday yet they both hit five against
    European opposition.

Still, the IIHF and IOC will be happy as the viewing figures for
the Final will be quite good if the two big nations get there
and play each other. It'll be their dream Final.

I will have to find another channel to watch it on though as the
BBC commentary for the USA game last night was awful.

Arent they all "NHL Nations"?-a Even Germany has top NHL players.

Canada got off to a good start yesterday but play what may or may
not be an "NHL Nation" today.-a How can old man Sid the Kid play two
    games in a row?
Maybe I just dont understand the rules and I dont.-a But how come
Italy got the last rock in both the last two innings?

    Shades of 1970

    Going into the last inning
    Germany 5 - 4 Italy

    Going to Overtime
    5-5 FT

But now Germany has the Hammer.

I dont know what the curling crowds in kanada, but the Italians are
    really getting into it

CBC Gem at best is a terrible app. It really has a lot of little issues
and some big issues but now that there might actually be a couple of thousands people using it, it is terrible.-a The "unplugged extension
cable" error came up, so I actually missed the final period of overtime.
-aBut it ends 6-5 for Germany.-a I got the feeling that the Italians had
an English speaking manager, probably Canadian.-a He got his tactics all wrong.
    Sacked in the Morning.

Canada leading 3-1 vs Suisse-a in the ice hockey.-a Is the Swiss keeper in the NHL?

I dont like it, they are ahead 5-1 and they are crippling lil

Unlucky for Fiala, but Wilson didn't actually mean it. (For
    once!)

Why dont you think an non North American team can win?

I can't see anyone stopping Canada. Maybe the US Rangers (be it
in the final or semi-final) but with three elite first lines
virtually, and a top line like the McDavid - MacKinnon -
Celebrini line that Cooper put together during the game last
night, it's hard to see anyone stopping Team Canada.

It's possible Canada could get over-confident and blow-it, but
if the Olympic gold medal goes to a European team, (even one
full of NHL players, like Sweden) I would be very shocked... as
would most of Canada I'd say!

I am an ABU though, anyone but Usa. ANd its not just cus of
Trump, I have hated USA for a long time.

How could anyone not like a team coached by Sullivan, Quinn and
Tortorella, that plays in a royal blue jersey, with white and
red? They are the US Rangers... Let's Go Rangers! :-)

The only negative thing I could say about team USA can be said
    in one word... TKACHUK !

    Yes itAs true.

Yes, I was a bit annoyed at the NBC commentary that described every
contestant today as "the greatest ever": Odermatt greatest ever Swiss
skier, Kristoffersen greatest ever Norwegian [*]...seems a bit
disrespectful to some of the giants of the past (Zurbriggen, Aamodt)

    Yes it-As true.

Yes, I was a bit annoyed at the NBC commentary that described every contestant today as "the greatest ever": Odermatt greatest ever Swiss
skier, Kristoffersen greatest ever Norwegian [*]...seems a bit
disrespectful to some of the giants of the past (Zurbriggen, Aamodt)

I mean you could even say itrCOs disrespectful to the
guy who won three gold medals at these Olympics.

    Ciao,
    Werner

[*] Maybe their statements were qualified in some way, like "best ever
skier in the technical dsiciplines," but still...

I do not know what "hog lines" are but we are witnessing the biggest controversy in the history of Curling, no, the history of the Winter
Olympics, no, the history of the world of sports!

Apparently in the game between Sweden and Kanada, the Canadians were
accused of not releasing stones before the hog line and somehow making detectors not go off by doing something something. Now I get that
Curling is a highly evolved, super technical sport, I mean how can
sliding rocks on the ice not be, but I dont fully understand what happened.

In other news Germany lost to Latvia in the ice hockey, so we can safely

So the quest for Canadian Gold continues. I would have thought that
with the events today like Roller Derby on Ice aka short track speed
skating or Snow Skateboarding they might have got at least one.

But no, the likes of Brasil, Great Britain, Australia and Kazakhstan are
all ahead of Canada in the medal table.

    Not that difficult for me

    Six are NHL regulars

    Draisaitl, Seider, St|+tzle the stars

Peterka (the biggest success story of SalzburgrCys RB
Academy), a bit disappointing up to this point

    Grubauer the goalie
    Sturm the fourth-liner

Reichel (might have had his last chance) and Samanski
(just had his NHL debut) are AHL/NHL 'tweeners

Of course, if you had listened to some German hockey
journalists and fans before this tournament you might
be forgiven to think that they have 25 NHL All Stars.

They didnrCOt take the loss to Latvia too well.

The Swiss can not be beat in the Ice Hockey, they first came back vs the Czechs and then would not let the Czechs come back, not even in OT. A

Now if we go by the NHL standard of more NHL players means better team,

meet yourCO and is completely flummoxed when
Nightingale answers in perfect and broadest Tyrolean

Turns out that nobody bothered to find out that
Nightingale has spent half the year in Tyrol from
    the age of five.

He had to have gone somewhere to practice, Bolton doesn't
    get much snow!

Correction, it was not the Snow Skatebaord, I thought it was the

skis where they jump high and do somersaults and stuff and only
    Canadians participate.

rCaand the recriminations start basically with the final
    whistle.

It seems evident that the team never gelled and that
the coaching team wasnrCOt up to task of integrating the
NHLers. Simply playing Draisaitl and St|+tzle for 25
minutes and hope for the best just doesnrCOt cut it,
    especially in back-to-backs.

And yeah IrCOm gleeful about some German fans and

    Er... yes?

Looks like ski-mo is not going to save the Italians, but good for
Spain that they introduced this new sport, allowing them to get
their first two Winter Olympic medals (one gold) in 40 years or so.

Anyway, not much of a fan, to be honest: the winner is whoever is best
at transitioning between skis/boots/skis/downhill skis, hardly
anything happens on the course itself. A bit like Formula 1 and pit
    stops.

    Scenery was great, though.

Does the nation that tops the overall medals table get a Gold
medal for 'winning' The Olympics though? That's what I need to
    know!

    :)

Looks like ski-mo is not going to save the Italians, but good
for Spain that they introduced this new sport, allowing them
to get their first two Winter Olympic medals (one gold) in 40
    years or so.

It's good to see countries that normally don't do well on snow
and ice pick up a medal or two at the Winter Olympics. The
practice might come in handy one day... what with all that
global warming and climate change (that they keep going on
about... I mean, those countries could all be under snow one
    day!!!

And the Yanks also take the women's figure skating gold, meaning that

They also overatke Italy for second place in the medal table. Olympics

First Gold since 1972 (when Francisco Fern|indez

silver and bronze medals since, in snowboarding and
figure skating, and one by FranciscorCys sister Blanca
    (both siblings died tragically early).

Anyway, not much of a fan, to be honest: the winner is whoever is best
at transitioning between skis/boots/skis/downhill skis, hardly
anything happens on the course itself. A bit like Formula 1 and pit
    stops.

No, that was ridiculous, almost a caricature of true
ski mountaineering. A result of the IOCrCys obsession
that new sports need to be 'media-friendlyrCy i.e.
TikTok-bite-sized. The same happened in the Summer
Games where they shoe-horned Speed into the
    Climbing competition.

DonrCOt think the overall reception was too positive.

    Ciao,

I actually like the 3 v 3 OT... plenty of space for the
skilled players to do their stuff. It might make it a
bit of a lottery though, so going ahead with 35 seconds
left was probably the better option! Finland were tough
opponents, they gave it their all. I know he was on the

There must be, as I saw twenty-five Gold medals placed around
the necks of the US men's hockey team yesterday afternoon. The
day before, the USA women's hockey team got twenty-three Gold
medals given to them - that's forty-eight Gold's in total just
in the one sport! Yet your league table says the USA only got
twelve Gold medals in total at this Winter Olympics.

    So, there's something wrong there.

By my reckoning the USA won the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics as
they got more actual Gold medals than anyone else!

Where do they go to claim their no-prize? We'll send Brady

Netherlands and their speed skaters do just enough to eke onto the

    two (Speedskating and Short Track)

There must be, as I saw twenty-five Gold medals placed around
the necks of the US men's hockey team yesterday afternoon. The
day before, the USA women's hockey team got twenty-three Gold
medals given to them - that's forty-eight Gold's in total just
in the one sport! Yet your league table says the USA only got
twelve Gold medals in total at this Winter Olympics.

    So, there's something wrong there.

By my reckoning the USA won the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics as
they got more actual Gold medals than anyone else!

If you go to the bottom of the NYT article, and "Choose your own medal
table", you can sort the table by number of athletes or number of
physical medals awarded, and lo and behold, US comes in first in both categories, with 66 physical gold medals, and 64 different athletes
    winning a gold.

Canada is second in both rankings by number of medals (irrespective of
color). If instead you sort by golds, the rankings are:

    Number of physical golds:
    1. USA 66-13-9
    2. Norway 26-16-13
    3. France 19-11-6

    Number of athletes with gold:

    1. USA 64-9-7
    2. Norway 17-7-6
    3. Italy 16-6-21

I like this ranking better, even if Italy is not doing so great in it.
Periodic old-man rant about medal inflation: does it really make sense
to have the 500, 1000, and 1500 meters speed skating as separate
events? And aren't Klaebo's multiple medals just slightly different
variants of the same thing? If I were the Olympic czar, the track
events at the next olympics would be reduced to:

100 meters (who's the best pure sprinter)
400 meters (who's the best long sprinter, or whatever the 400 meters
    measures)
1500 meters (best middle distance runner)
10000 meters (best semi-long distance runner)
    marathon (best long distance)

That is only half nerdy. The true nerd will run a regression of medals
on population, GDP per capita, and maybe some measure of suitability
for winter sports. The winner is the country with the biggest
residual. I think it will be a fight between, Latvia, Slovenia and
    Bulgaria
