For those that dont get enough football during the festive season, you
can now watch the Football on Christmas day. Do they know its Christmas
time? Dont they watch old videos with Boy George and Bob Geldoff? I
think the scheduling answers that, they dont know it in Africa. As far
as I know they dont know it in most of Asia and parts of Alberta and
Alaska as well. Oh those Albertan Heathens!

You could not host an AFCON in Kanada at that time, so any ideas of
Kanada bidding on the next AFCON is out of the question! we are freezing
here on the Iceberg and it snows like every second day, this has been
the coldest Winter ever! Oddly-or maybe not? This was the hottest
    summer ever.

So much to the dismay of Liverpool fans, Mohammad Salah will not be able
to play for the next month or more. Does he still get paid? One week of
his salary could eliminate Famine for a week in all of Africa

Morrocco is hosting, they are also hosting the next WC I think? And
just like Canada hosting this World Cup, I think Morrocco hosts around 3
games in that WC. On a side note, I am seeing some crazy prices for
games in TO, yet I know my friend got tickets to the Germany game vs
Ivory Coast and they are not costing anywhere near the $3333 dollars I
    am reading about.

    Groups

Much like most National competitions being hosted nowadays, lots of
teams qualify and then lots of teams make the KO round. In this case
you have 24 teams qualified or almost half of Africa and then 16 make
the next round. As far as i know, none of the tickets will cost $3333,
though Morrocco is a richer AFCON nation so they might cost $333 for a
final, especially if Morrocco makes it and they are possibly the best
team in AFCON at the moment. Having been to Morrocco, you can find
booze fairly easily, so if you live in Europe, it wouldnt be a bad way
to spend the holidays. Here on the Iceberg, we go to Cuba or Dominican
or Jamaica and they ply us with as much booze as you can drink from the
minute you get off the plane. I really dont know how those resorts can
offer all you can eat and drink sometimes. If you have seen Albertans
or Quebecers drinking they can consume vast quantities. WE bring giant
Bubba insulated ups that hold litres of stuff and we get them to fill it
up and "it" can be Beer, Rum or whatever you want, though not as much
wine and usually not very good wine.

    Group A
    Comoros
    Mali
    Morocco
    Zambia

    Group B
    Angola
    Egypt
    South Africa
    Zimbabwe

    Group C
    Nigeria
    Tanzania
    Tunisia
    Uganda

    Group D
    Benin
    Botswana
    DR Congo

    Group E
    Algeria
    Burkina Faso
    Equatorial Guinea
    Sudan

    Group F
    Cameroon
    Gabon
    Ivory Coast
    Mozambique

Our AFCON team will do an in depth analysis in the next week if we can?
though we will say that Group F is Mark's favourite group ever. It does
look like the toughest group, but what do I know about African football.
I do know that Ivory Coast is reigning champion.

There aren't actually any matches on Christmas day. Christmas eve and Boxing day though.

My prediction is that Cameroon won't win it. (We didn't even qualify for the World Cup!)

Morrocco beats Comoros 2-0 in what sounds like an easy opening match for
the hosts, but it didnt start off so well. First of all the Opening ceremonies were pelted with huge rain storms, ruining the great dancing choreographic efforts of whoever and whatever they were doing. Then
World player of the year Hakimi was not playing due to injury-though he
is on the bench, so one assumes he will play later? Then early in the
match Morrocco had a penal saved. Then ex WWEpl Superstar Ruben Saiss
went off early with an injury which may rule him out of the rest of the cup.

But everything was better in the 2nd half, the rain stopped, Morrocco
scored twice, the first goal by Real and Spain superstar Brahim Diaz and
    every one went home happy.

Nice new stadium in Rabat, looks like it was made or at least designed
by the same people who did the Bayern stadium. It is one of those
stadiums that have the outside that can light up in whatever colours or designs you want. It looked like a sell out, I think the stadium holds
    around 70K.

Infantino was there of course, even if he hates the AFCON and has made
them change it to once every 4 years instead of two years. He did bless
all the players though and vowed not to steal anything while the match
was being played, but did threaten to ban all African competitions until
they start making him, or I guess FIFA more money. But it is the time
of giving so he was very forgiving of the criminally low ticket prices
and measly, almost non existent sponsorship deals for Afcon. I mean
come on, VISA is a sponsor, do they still even make Credit Cards
anymore? He was happy to see betting sponsors, though he is pushing to
get Beer and Pork-rind sponsorship deals for the play off games.

Only three games tomorrow, but after that 4 games a day. If you want,
you can spend about 10 hours a day watching just AFCON for the next
couple of weeks! Except on Christmas day, but if you really want to
watch something on Xmas, I think the Junior Ice Hockey starts on
    Christmas day.

Second day and no one has won the AFCON yet, There is still time to bet
the house on Cameroon, they are still looking good to win the whole thing.

I watched some of the Egypt vs Zimbabwe and for a while i thought
Zimbabwe would win it, then I thought it would be a draw and then I knw
Egypt would win. Mardin would love the stadium in Agadir, ir has a
running track, no roof and is large and interesting looking. This
stadium did not exist when I was last in Agadir, which shows you how old
    I am.

The good thing about Agadir is that you can find booze pretty easily,
they sell it in the Super markets and it is cheap. Moroccans for the
most part are cheap drunks, and i dont mean that in a bad way. The other
good thing about Agadir si that it is a relatively easy drive to
Marrakesh, oh and the beaches are nice, the king or prince or whoever it
    is lives in Agadir.

Oh yeah, Mo Salah got he winner for Egypt and South Africa won.

Four games tomorrow, we have not got the info yet to tell you who is actually playing tomorrow, but we know there will be at least 6 teams
    maybe 8?

I think for the moment North Africa is beating West Africa, but that can change anytime.

Merry Christmas to the 5.4 people who are still using this newsgroup.

a rest day in the Afrika cup after one round of matches, I am going to
say no surprises in the 1st round, all the favourites won. I am also
going to say all the teams that won first round matches will advance to
the ko round. 16 out of 24 teams advance and 3 points should be enough
to get you at least 3rd place.

From what i have seen, the fans are coming out to watch the football
matches, decent crowd support for all the matches I watched. Mardin
would like the stadiums, many seem to have nice big running tracks. The
only surprising thing might be all the rain, it seems every match I
    watch it is raining.

Some interesting matches coming up, Egypt vs S Africa tomorrow. Though
both teams should qualify, this might decide first place, but it is too
early to start looking at positions and their meaning in the next
rounds. Nigeria vs Tunisia is a classic North vs West matchup on the
27th, but Cameroon vs Ivory coast on the 28th looks like the match of
    the second round.

The whole World from Angola to Zambia has embraced the Long Throw.
Except that the long throw is not a new innovation or tactic, there used
to be guys who would do a long run up and then a flip kinda thing to get
even more distance on the throw. But yeah in the first game there seemed
to be a lot of long throw ins. Anyhow the game ended Angloa 1 -1 Zambia.

The second game was the MOTD and it had its moments, not as full of
drama as the BEIN commentators would make you think, but a late first
half penal for Egypt, put away by Salah followed by a sending off for
Egypt meant that the 2nd half should be full of Drama.

The reality was Egypt pulled of a relatively easy Italian Job, with the
only Drama coming from a non Hand ball Penal call, which was correct,
even if the English commentator thought it was a clear handball. It was
what we call in the game an "English handball" call, the Egyptian player
was sliding on the ground and the ball hit his hand. It was like an
English handball call in that it took about 10 mins for the VARobots and
ref to figure it out though.

The 10 men of Egypt "hang on" to win 1-0.

The stadium in Agadir was full. It almost looks like they are allowing
fans in after the match has started? The stadium looks half empty at
kick off but after 15 -20 mins the stadium is full. It might just be
that Morrocans do not appreciate showing up on time for events? This is
very bothersome, even for a heavily sedated German. I dunno, Mr. Lily
White is always late to show up for things, I just have a different way
of thinking, I may be high us a kite, but I still have to show up on time.

How come the WWEpl is not playing today?

We got a deserved draw against the Champions of Africa. We had 2 shots deflected onto the crossbar. Maybe there's some hope of making an

We played in the wrong colours for some bizarre reason though; what was

You do know it's the holiday period, right? People are too
busy spending time with their families... or just eating
junk food all day long and lazing around in front of the
    television watching the Darts!

    Or something...

I haven't seen any AFCON games this year so I've nothing else
    to contribute.

(Chelsea FC, for once, don't have any players shirking their
day job - that they get paid a lot of money to do - to go off
on holiday for some international get-together in the sun.)

Was a good game or at least a good second half, still no conclusive
winner in the battle of Lions vs Elephants.

Down to the end of the group matches, so group games being played at the
same time. Egypt fielding a B team means Angola probably has the better chance to get in as a third place team. But then again the other match
is also tied at the end of the half and if Zimbabwe win they could knock
out S Africa, depending on Angola winning.

So yeah it is still wide open. Egypt probably wins the group regardless
of winning or losing today, but the other 3 have something to play for I think? I dont know if they use h2h or goals to decide?

Later today we could see the return of World Player of the year Hakimi.
Though I am pretty sure Morrocco is already assured a place in the next
    round?

SO H2H is the initial tie breaker.

    Final table
    Egypt 7

Will 2 points be enough to get you a 3rd place spot?

So the top seeds (Pot A) won every single group, though in two cases
this was GD or even goals scored. And all the second placed teams came
from Pot B. So a little disappointing in terms of upsets and upstart performances from underdogs - unlike some previous AFCONs. The last
few WCQ and recent AFCONs would suggest there is a lot of parity between African teams (see also the fact that Ghana and Cabo Verde did not even qualify for this edition of AFCON) so I am a little surprised that
everything so far has unfolded in a fairly predictable manner. Some
very even matchups in the round of 16, though.

For those that dont get enough football during the festive season,
you can now watch the Football on Christmas day. Do they know its

Africa. As far as I know they dont know it in most of Asia and parts
of Alberta and Alaska as well. Oh those Albertan Heathens!

You could not host an AFCON in Kanada at that time, so any ideas of
Kanada bidding on the next AFCON is out of the question! we are
freezing here on the Iceberg and it snows like every second day, this
has been the coldest Winter ever! Oddly-or maybe not? This was the
    hottest summer ever.

So much to the dismay of Liverpool fans, Mohammad Salah will not be
able to play for the next month or more. Does he still get paid? One
week of his salary could eliminate Famine for a week in all of Africa

Morrocco is hosting, they are also hosting the next WC I think? And
just like Canada hosting this World Cup, I think Morrocco hosts
around 3 games in that WC. On a side note, I am seeing some crazy
prices for games in TO, yet I know my friend got tickets to the
Germany game vs Ivory Coast and they are not costing anywhere near
the $3333 dollars I am reading about.

    Groups

Much like most National competitions being hosted nowadays, lots of
teams qualify and then lots of teams make the KO round. In this case
you have 24 teams qualified or almost half of Africa and then 16 make
the next round. As far as i know, none of the tickets will cost
$3333, though Morrocco is a richer AFCON nation so they might cost
$333 for a final, especially if Morrocco makes it and they are
possibly the best team in AFCON at the moment. Having been to
Morrocco, you can find booze fairly easily, so if you live in Europe,
it wouldnt be a bad way to spend the holidays. Here on the Iceberg,
we go to Cuba or Dominican or Jamaica and they ply us with as much
booze as you can drink from the minute you get off the plane. I
really dont know how those resorts can offer all you can eat and
drink sometimes. If you have seen Albertans or Quebecers drinking
they can consume vast quantities. WE bring giant Bubba insulated ups
that hold litres of stuff and we get them to fill it up and "it" can
be Beer, Rum or whatever you want, though not as much wine and
    usually not very good wine.

Our AFCON team will do an in depth analysis in the next week if we
can? though we will say that Group F is Mark's favourite group ever.
It does look like the toughest group, but what do I know about
African football. I do know that Ivory Coast is reigning champion.

Tanzania go through to the next round by virtue of having scored 1 goal
more in their 1-1 draw with Tunisia than Angola scored in their draw
with Egypt in a completely different group. How much sense does that
    make?

a rest day in the Afrika cup after one round of matches, I am going to
say no surprises in the 1st round, all the favourites won.-a I am also
going to say all the teams that won first round matches will advance to
the ko round. 16 out of 24 teams advance and 3 points should be enough
to get you at least 3rd place.

From what i have seen, the fans are coming out to watch the football matches, decent crowd support for all the matches I watched. Mardin
would like the stadiums, many seem to have nice big running tracks.

This brought a smile to my face. I've been too busy with "reel life"
plus the timing with Christmas and New Year hasn't been great, but from
what little I've seen there have been some nice running tracks!

Hopefully get to watch a bit more now the knockout rounds are commencing.

AFCON thread? I hope he wasn't put out.

    -a The
only surprising thing might be all the rain, it seems every match I
    watch it is raining.

Some interesting matches coming up, Egypt vs S Africa tomorrow.-a Though both teams should qualify, this might decide first place, but it is too early to start looking at positions and their meaning in the next
rounds. Nigeria vs Tunisia is a classic North vs West matchup on the
27th, but Cameroon vs Ivory coast on the 28th looks like the match of
    the second round.

So the top seeds (Pot A) won every single group, though in two cases
this was GD or even goals scored.-a And all the second placed teams came from Pot B.-a-a So a little disappointing in terms of upsets and upstart performances from underdogs - unlike some previous AFCONs.-a-a The last
few WCQ and recent AFCONs would suggest there is a lot of parity between African teams (see also the fact that Ghana and Cabo Verde did not even qualify for this edition of AFCON) so I am a little surprised that everything so far has unfolded in a fairly predictable manner.-a Some

Sudan started the second half with a well worked chance that was blocked
from close range, this match could have been so different had that gone
in. Senegal controlled the game from there on and were comfortable.

Let us not forget that Sudan haven't even been able to train in their
own country due to the conflict there and are apparently assembled of
part time and lower league players, wheras Senegal have players at some
of Europe's top clubs, so no disgrace in Sudan losing this one,
particularly considering they were in the lead at one point.

    Mali 0 - Tunisia 0

Mali are down to 10 men after Coulibaly was sent off for stamping on
Hannibal, but the big news is that the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca
has a running track around it! This makes the match look so much better.

Say what you like about CAF, but the one thing you can't deny is that
they know how to build a stadium in that confederation. Unlike UEFA
where every new stadium is just the same arena desgin and you can't tell whether you're in England or Germany because all the stadiums look the same.

The Stade Mohammed V has a classic bowl design with a cover along one
length of the pitch (the other stands are uncovered), it looks to be set
in a built up area and as I said earlier, it has a running track around
it. This is exactly the sort of stadium we need AFCON and Wolrd Cup
matches to be held in, not some European Arena or NFL stadium.

Yeah, the second half has started -will Mali play for penalties?

Mali are down to 10 men after Coulibaly was sent off for stamping on Hannibal, but the big news is that the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca
has a running track around it! This makes the match look so much better.

Say what you like about CAF, but the one thing you can't deny is that
they know how to build a stadium in that confederation. Unlike UEFA
where every new stadium is just the same arena desgin and you can't tell whether you're in England or Germany because all the stadiums look the
    same.

    RM

Craziness here in Casablanca. Just as it looked the game was going to
extra time and penalties, two minutes from the end Tunisia chip the ball
into the area and Chaouat heads in to put them 1-0 up.

But then in injury time a VAR handball penalty (it was a handball, it
just took forever to decide) is given to Mali, Sinayoko converts to
level the scores at 1-1 and take us back to extra time again!

    Only in the AFCON, people!

Just as you should never walk away from a game just because a team has
scored in the 89 min, you also have to wait for VAR when a team has
scored. Morrocco scored and i went out to get a tea and crumpet, only
to come back and find the game 0-0, which is how it stands at HT.

From what I am guessing with the free tickets they allegedly are giving
away. It seems to me that at kick off the stadium would be half empty or
worse and as the game continued it would fill up. Which suggests to me
that they are waiting for the people who have bough tickets to get in
and then after about 15 mins letting people in for free.

Anyhow, Tanzania not doing to badly, even if Morrocco seems to have more
    of the chances and play

Whatever happens today we must not forget that this tournament has given Morocco a chance to show what it can do when it co-hosts the 20230 World Cup.

Except probably not, as presumably they won't be allowed to give away
free tickets to a noon kick off in Agadir between Uzbekistan and New Zealand.

The late game is South Africa vs Cameroon. Cameroon are favourites.

Controversy right at the end where a clear push by a Moroccan defender

Tanzania outraged, it did look like Morocco got away with one there.

South Africa scrambled in a late goal with the wonderfully named

Afer recent tribulations it just feels so good to see the Indomitable

    Yes, today's results were:

    Egypt 3 - Benin 1 (AET)

An 83rd minute equaliser from Benin took this to extra time but Egypt's
    class told in extra time.

This game was played in the 45000 capacity Adrar Stadium in Agadir. It
looked practially empty at kick off but as Binder has observed with
other matches it seemed to get gradaully fuller as the match went on
(free tickets?) - although it never got anywhere near full and the
aerial shot of the stadium showed entire empty blocks. The emptyness
somehow made the stadium look bigger than it actually is (I estimated
60000+ before checking the capacity online).

The stadium is a proposed World Cup 2030 venue, well they better make
sure they arrange it to host matches like Argentina - England or Brazil
    - Germany as on today's evidence they're going to struggle to sell
tickets to a midday kickoff between North Korea and Panama.

I didn't see any of Nigeria 4 - Mozambique 0 but I guess the scoreline
    says it all.

Meanwhile on the Iceberg, it is a balmy 3C and warming up, it is still

Quite a slow pace to the play.

This match is a tale of two kits. Algeria in a traditional white with
green trim (the sleeves have green and red trim). Made by Addidas, this
is a kit that could be worn by other countries with green and red in
their flag such as Bulgaria or Hungary.

Nigeria's kit is on the opposite side of the spectrum - black with
splashes of green all over. Made by Nike. Is it cultural? I don't know,
but the base design doesn't lend itself to being worn by another team.

Couldn't properly watch this because of pesky work reasons but
    Senegal won 1-0.

    Morocco v Cameroon coming up!

    RM

Morrocco leading 1-0 at HT.-a Lots of football still to play

The Spanish Moroccans are doing it-a for Morrocco.-a I cant see
    Cameroon coming back now.

2-0 and maybe 20 mins left

Two more North-West Derbies today.-a I predict this time the West will
    win.

    33 minutes played, Algeria 0 - Nigeria 0.

This is looking like a proper AFCON match. The largely full Stade de
Marrakech has a running track around it, as I look outside to bleak
and literally freezing weather the match is being played under
sunshine, the Nigerian fans are playing that happy go lucky tune they
play on their trumpets - this is what an AFCON match should look and
    sound like!

Nigeria having most of the game and Algeria have cleared the ball off
    th line.

Meanwhile on the Iceberg, it is a balmy 3C and warming up, it is still morning here. I am sitting outside, yes in a parka, but sneakers and no gloves or toques. the sun is trying to come out too.-a It is supposed to snow heavily by tomnight, but that is life on the Iceberg.

    Anyhow 0-0 ht,

Nigeria look more likely, but I would not be prepared to bet any amount
of houses on them winning, lotsa football to be played.

Cameroon the designated "home" team despite this being played in
Morocco in front of a largely Moroccan crowd.

Brahim Diaz gave Morocco the lead after a Cameroon defender tried

Morocco are shutting out Cameroon at the back and all the

73 minutes, Cameroon give away a pointless free kick on the right

through a crowd of players to make it 2-0. Interesting goal
celebration that sees his teammates kick him repeatedly on the

    Cameroon just not in this.

Only one team on the pitch today.

Some very un-AFCON like defending and pressing from Morocco who

To be fair an AFCON needs the host team do go as far as possible for

    What a first half.

Marmoush received a pass on 3 minutes, his marker fell over, allowing
Marmoush a clear run on goal to put Egypt 1-0 up. Rabia headed in from a corner to make ot 2-0 on 32 minutes.

Egypt seemed to be clear favourites to frustrate Binder's "West 2 North
0" prediction but five minutes from the break Ivory Coast crossed in,
Egypt made a mess of clearing it and El Fotouh scored an own goal. This
game is now up for grabs!

The stadium in Agadir did the usual AFCON 2025 trick of being
practically empty at the start but filling up nicely after kickoff.
Online articles suggest it's accepted they're letting people in for free
after kickoff where games haven't sold out. We missed a trick, we all
should have arranged a rss day trip and watched this exciting match free
    of charge!

Online articles suggest it's accepted they're letting people in for free after kickoff where games haven't sold out. We missed a trick, we all
should have arranged a rss day trip and watched this exciting match free
    of charge!

It's all happening in Agadir! Early in the second half Salah got on the
end of Rabia's cross to make it 3-1 Egypt, but Guela Doue has just
scambled in froma corner to pull a goal back for Ivory Coast!

14 minutes to go, Egypt 3 - Ivory Coast 2.

Yes, good to have you back, and good to see lots of

    the AFCON!

    33 minutes played, Algeria 0 - Nigeria 0.

This is looking like a proper AFCON match. The largely full Stade >>>>>> de Marrakech has a running track around it, as I look outside to
bleak and literally freezing weather the match is being played

Quite a slow pace to the play.

This match is a tale of two kits. Algeria in a traditional white
with green trim (the sleeves have green and red trim). Made by
Addidas, this is a kit that could be worn by other countries with
green and red in their flag such as Bulgaria or Hungary.

Nigeria's kit is on the opposite side of the spectrum - black with
splashes of green all over. Made by Nike. Is it cultural? I don't
know, but the base design doesn't lend itself to being worn by
    another team.

    RM

Two goals ten minutes apart, Osimhen had already put Nigeria 1-0 up
and Akor Adams has gone round the keeper to make it 2-0.

62 minutes played, very difficult to see a way back for Algeria.

    FT:

Oh dear. The two early second half goals really killed this.

Binder's prediction about the West going 2-0 over the North is now
    halfway there.

Nigeria will play Morocco in the semi-final.

A quarter final befitting any AFCON.

Semi finals are on Wednesday 14th January:

    Senegal - Egypt

    Nigeria - Morocco

Perfectly balanced between North African and West African teams.

So the top seeds (Pot A) won every single group, though in two cases
this was GD or even goals scored. And all the second placed teams
came from Pot B. So a little disappointing in terms of upsets and
upstart performances from underdogs - unlike some previous AFCONs.
The last few WCQ and recent AFCONs would suggest there is a lot of
parity between African teams (see also the fact that Ghana and Cabo
Verde did not even qualify for this edition of AFCON) so I am a
little surprised that everything so far has unfolded in a fairly
predictable manner. Some very even matchups in the round of 16,
    though.

All the 3rd place teams in the 1st round went out in the 2nd round.
    That's good.

And it looks like they got the seeding right. All the semi-finalists
were Pot 1 teams. I think that's a good thing isn't it? The best teams
    getting the results they deserve?

It does look like the toughest group, but what do I know about
African football. I do know that Ivory Coast is reigning champion.

Well here's my attempt at an in depth analysis of how Cameroon did.

OK, perhaps not very in depth. We changed our team formation just about
every game. Was this poor coaching, showing that David Pagou doesn't
know what he's doing, or good coaching, adapting our tactics according
    to the opposition or something?

We seemed to do OK, apart from the game against Morocco when, judging
by Real Mardin's comments on here, we were well beaten.

I think we might have had a problem with poor finishing. We only
actually scored 4 goals. The other 2 were scored for us by our
    opponents, ie own goals.

SO if I remember correctly, Morrocco and Senegal were favourites when
this started and we could have that as the final. In my opinion Nigeria
has looked the best team so far and Egypt is the most successful nation,
so this is a proper semi finals. Really hard to pick, I am going to say Senegal and Nigeria, but it is tough to call. Bookies still seem to have Senegal and Morrocco as favourites to win the semi finals.
