  • The GCHQ National Language Competition

    The National Language Competition (NLC) is a virtual competition for
    teams of 13-14 year olds from around the UK to compete against each
    other to solve language-based challenges and score points.

    Not a traditional puzzle, but a challenge. Registration is restricted. However, there are sample challenges that anyone can attempt.

    Another linguistics competition is the International Linguistics
    Olympiad. Here is the team problem from the 2013 Olympiad, which
    could easily occupy one for several evenings:

    I see the questions from the International Mathematical Olympiad are
    also on-line.

    Funny how, when you are at school, much of it it seems a chore, but long
    after you have left school you recognize the value of the opportunities
    you could have pursued.
