Unfortunately, it seems that JLA Forums is doing the same thing with the
new rec.arts.poems addition

Since they're still in 2003 right now hopefully Mummy Chunk can help get
the he moderator there to straighten out this problem as the next 22
years of archives are being uploaded.

JLA Forums now carries rec.arts.poems but my posts of 22 years ago are,
sadly, mostly missing:

I just wish they would fix their line wrap in quoting, which sometimes
produces broken quote lines, and that they would produce proper
references headers so that threading worked properly for those using a
newsreader.

Usually, everything shows as a reply to the first article in the thread, >>> not the actual article being replied to, so no threading in newsreaders.

How's it looking, Retro Guy?

I'm not very well versed in these matters so I can't judge properly.

This reply that you just made looks fine, but I think you wrote this
from novaBBS.

If you scroll up in this thread to posts from Will-Dockery, you will see lines like:

LOL!

Sorry, I typed and posted this during a Christmas party
yesterday, and
the typo slipped in.

Consider it hereby corrected:

Where 'yesterday, and' is wrapped to a new line without quoting. It
breaks the quoting.

Another above:

I just wish they would fix their line wrap in quoting, which
sometimes
produces broken quote lines, and that they would produce proper
references headers so that threading worked properly for those

where a bunch of lines have the same issue.

Jlaforum wraps the lines, but does not maintain the quote level, so they
look a mess in a newsreader (and novaBBS). Then when someone quotes that
in a newsreader, it looks like a bunch of lines are written by a
previous poster, not the person who actually quoted them. It's a mess.

It seems Jlaforum using web forum software that does not understand
quoting properly for Usenet. Sometimes I see stuff like, '
' or '
' which is completely useless outside of the web forum
software, and looks a mess in a newsreader.

Basically, Jlaforum does not maintain Usenet quoting standards, and also
does not seem to maintain Usenet 'References: ' headers properly, which results in replies looking like they are to a different post than the
really are. So a newsreader can only go by this and it breaks threading
in a newsreader.

Plus, the dates are wrong, or at least they are not accurate, as they
are the date/time when the post was sent to giganews, not the date/time
when the user posted it. So when Jlaforum dumps their posts to giganews,
all the posts each dump get the same timestamp.

Not great for Usenet groups, but the software they use isn't made for
Usenet groups.

Can these problems be corrected?

JLA Forums has really improved over the past few weeks, definitely a
welcome addition, as their archives do go back over twenty years.

HTH and HAND.

Usenet is not the internet

I've been posting on Usenet newsgroups for over twenty years, of course I know that.

It was an Internet site that was connected to Usenet.

You're just a sneering troll, basically good for nothing, Cujo.

I corrected you

Although, again, no correction was needed.

There are large gaps in the archives of JLA Forums also, unfortunately.

I found this out when making a post by post search through various
years, 2004-2008 and so on, and found many of my threads are missing.

I think that's due to weblinks in the posts. I'm happy with what they're
doing for PPB now, but that's something they set up later; I'm sure the
bulk of PPB posts from the past just aren't there. And other posts with
links (like the Dancehall) still don't appear.

If it's any consolation, I think it's worked out worse for Team Monkey.
They're hunkered down on JLA Forums, where they can't promote their own
thing; and (since they can and do keep attaching binaries) most of what
they do post doesn't get out onto usenet.

I know it's different for you, because you and some nice people (like
MC) want to revitalize JLA Forums; but for me it's the closest thing
I've seen to my formula for usenet peace: the Monkey Cage, with them
staying in and us staying out. That failed with the AYOS threads on
google - we stayed out, but they wouldn't stay in - and only worked with
their facebook group until they learned how to get back on here - but
this time, thanks to JLA's approach to technology, it seems to be
working better than ever before.
