The MAT aims to test the depth of mathematical understanding of a student in the fourth term of their A-levels (or equivalent) rather than a breadth of knowledge. It is set with the aim of being approachable by all students, including those without Further Mathematics A-level, and those from other educational systems (e.g. Baccalaureate and Scottish Highers).

Some of the 2022 and 2023 past papers are labelled 'modified'. This means SQA made changes to the question paper in response to the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as part of our modifications to assessment in National Courses. For example, a modified past paper may be shorter, have fewer marks or contain fewer topics than past papers from previous years.

For examinations up to and including the 2018 papers, the specification for STEP 1 and STEP 2 was based on Mathematics A Level content while the syllabus for STEP 3 was based on Further Mathematics A Level. The questions on STEP 2 and 3 were about the same difficulty. Both STEP 2 and STEP 3 are harder than STEP 1.[6]
STEP is marked by teams of mathematicians specially trained for the purpose. All the markers have Mathematics degrees and most are reading for PhDs at Cambridge. Each question is marked by a small team who coordinate to ensure their question is marked fairly and that all correct solutions are given appropriate marks. Markers are closely supervised by a team of marking supervisors, usually senior teachers, who are responsible for the mark scheme and by a senior Mathematics assessment expert. All non-crossed-out work is assessed and a candidate's final score is based on their six highest scoring solutions. All papers are checked at least twice to ensure that all of a candidate's non-crossed-out solutions have been assessed. A candidate's marks are then independently entered twice into a database to ensure that there are no clerical errors in mark recording. The mark data is then checked a further time by a small team who hand check a random selection of scripts.
Practice materials, including past papers, example solutions, and a STEP formula booklet, are available for free from the Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing website. The STEP support programme provides modules for individual additional study, along with hints and solutions. Furthermore, the book "Advanced Problems in Mathematics: Preparing for University" by Stephen Siklos, a former paper-setter for STEP, has been specifically written for students preparing for it.
Here you will find the Edexcel AS maths index for tutorials and worked solutions to the Advanced Supplementary maths past papers covering everything you need to know in order to pass the exam with confidence.
Hi. I am having trouble with maths at the moment and am due to do ordinary leaving cert this June . Teacher has suggested foundation level , does this exam qualify for any points and does an A, or B grade qualify for a pass in ordinary level ?? Thanks
You can utilise UKMT past papers, solutions and investigations as preparation materials for your students. They are a great resource containing high-quality problems from previous years designed to encourage mathematical thinking.
The specification changed in 2017 so you will need to be careful when you are doing past papers. For example, I have included legacy past papers as an option. These legacy papers examined the previous specification. These are great for revision; as a homework task or even to enable you to test your understanding of several topics at once under timed exam conditions.
Below, we have included all of the new past papers; the new WJEC sample papers and we have created exclusive MathsDIY mock exam papers based (as far as possible) on WJEC 2018 legacy papers. Extra questions have been added to these mock exams to ensure all topics are included. We hope you will find this excellent preparation.
Thanks to the SQA for making the excellent resources below freely available. N5 Maths replaced the Credit and Intermediate 2 courses although most of the topics are identical. The exam papers below will provide an excellent additional study resource.
Thanks to maths180.com for making the excellent resources below freely available. Please use for revision prior to assessments, tests and the final exam. All Booster Papers are also available in the Online Study Pack.
At 13+, we offer the CE mathematics examination at three levels. These are Foundation (Non-Calculator and Calculator papers), Core (Non-Calculator and Calculator papers) and Additional. All candidates take either Foundation or Core papers, and some candidates who take Core may also take the Additional paper. All candidates are expected to sit the mental arithmetic test, no matter which level they are taking.
We advise prep schools to liaise with senior schools about the levels at which pupils should sit the exam, and ensure that each candidate is registered for the appropriate level so that they receive the correct papers for the exam.
As always, exams will be marked by independent examiners, using the published mark schemes. Grading happens after marking, and to ensure fairness is done year by year because the papers change from one year to the next.
For Year 12 students: The exam board has redeveloped the mathematics qualification. The new specification presents a series of changes to assessment style/structure and content. The materials in this section are directly relevant to your course.
For Year 12 students: While these past papers are a little different to your course, they are still sound examination style practise and should be used supplemented by the materials supplied above.
The Government is committed to raising standards in maths to create the next generation of designers, scientists and engineers who will contribute to driving the economy forward. Students will take maths A level, as well as the STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) advanced maths exam, a pre-requisite for undergraduate entry to some of the leading university maths departments.
Richard Atkins, principal of Exeter College, said: Exeter College is a large and highly successful A level centre with extensive experience of providing enrichment and support to 16- to 19-year-old students. We are delighted to be working in partnership with our neighbouring Russell Group university to provide a regional centre for the most able young mathematicians so they can develop their knowledge and skills and study maths and related subjects at top universities in the future.
