    From msb@msb@vex.net (Mark Brader) to rec.games.trivia on Thu Aug 7 06:50:52 2025
    From Newsgroup: rec.games.trivia

Surprise! This time the regular season had 11 games, not 10 -- this
was necessary because the league had an odd number of teams playing.
So here begins Game 11, and after *that* I'll post the Final.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-11-25,
    and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of What She Said, and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2024-08-30
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
    (QFTCI*)".

    * Game 11, Round 2 - Miscellaneous - The International Foods Aisle

Most supermarkets now have an international foods aisle -- an aisle
with imported goods, or Canadian-made equivalents of those foods.
We'll name some companies that make a food item you might find
in the international foods aisle or a specialty store: you tell
us what they're selling. Be careful of table talk this round,
since companies often manufacture more than one kind of food!

    1. Grace, Old Jamaica, D and G, Gosling's.
    2. Lee Kum Kee, Cholula, Valentina, Huy Fong.
    3. Wilkin and Sons, Bonne Maman, D'Arbo, St. Dalfour.
    4. Nong Shim, Rooster, Ottogi, Nissin.
    5. Ruegenfisch, Angelo Parodi, Patella Do Mar, Tamam.
    6. Barr, Jarritos, Ben Shaw's, Milkis ["MILL-kiss"].
    7. Masaman, Patak's, Mae Ploy, Blue Dragon.
    8. Unox, Batchelor's, Maggi, Podravka.
    9. Misuzu, Rooster, San Sui, Sunrise.
    10. Botan, Kokuho, Dainty, Grace.

    * Game 11, Round 3 - Entertainment - Denzel Washington

This round's for the ladies. And also for the men who like Denzel
Washington. The rest of you might have problems.

    1. Denzel's first big role was in which '80s medical series,
where he played Dr. Philip Chandler?

    2. Denzel's first Academy Award nomination was for which 1987
    movie set in South Africa?

    3. Denzel is an accomplished Shakespearian actor, having portrayed
Richard III, Coriolanus, and Brutus in highly acclaimed
theatrical runs, but to date he has only appeared in two filmed
Shakespeare adaptations. Name *either role* Denzel played in
    these movies.

    4. Denzel has been nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars 7 times;
he won for "Training Day" (2001), and was also nominated for
the later one of his Shakespearian roles. Name the movie for
*any one of Denzel's other 5* nominations.

    5. Denzel has been nominated for two Tony awards. The first was
for his performance of "Fences" in 2010 (he also won); the
second was in 2018, for which Eugene O'Neill play?

Please decode the rot13 for the next two questions only after you have
    finished with the ones above.

    8. Denzel's biggest hit, box-office-wise, is a 2007 movie directed
by Ridley Scott, starring Denzel as infamous crime boss Frank
Lucas, and co-starring Russell Crowe as the cop trying to bring
    him down. Name that movie.

    9. Denzel has a reputation within the industry for making movies
at a moderate cost which are inevitably profitable in an era
where that is increasingly rare -- Variety magazine called
him "the last king of the mid-level hit". One such movie is
"Unstoppable" (2010), in which Denzel co-starred with Chris
Pine, where they are trying to stop a thing that is apparently
unstoppable. What are they trying to stop?

    10. Denzel's eldest son, John David Washington, is also an
accomplished actor, appearing in "Tenet" as well as the lead
role in a 2019 movie which earned Spike Lee his first Oscar
(for adapted screenplay), and for which John David was nominated
for a SAG Award and Golden Globe. Name it.
