B1. Which planet has the largest volcano in the solar system?
B3. Within 300, how many volcanoes on the Earth are currently
considered to be active?
C1. Prehistoric animals and insects get stuck in tree sap,
which, over millennia, hardens into a substance which is
often used as a gemstone. What substance is this?
C2. Mummification occurs when a body is preserved, intentionally
or not, by being kept in extremely dry conditions.
More mummies have been discovered in Egypt than any other
country - over a million. What species (animal or human)
is the most common type of Egyptian mummy?
C3. Bodies contained in a particular type of naturally anaerobic
environment can be preserved for hundreds or thousands
of years. An example is Tolland Man, found in Scandinavia,
and dated to 500 BC. in what type of environment are these
bodies found? Be sufficiently specific.
D1. This sedimentary rock usually forms from loose shell and

* A. Arts and Literature -- Alpha Flight
A1. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/alphA1.png
Alpha Flight are Marvel Comics' premier Canadian super-team.
One of the original members is Eugene Judd, a hirsute
dwarf acrobat. What is his codename?
A2. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/alphA2.png
Another original member of Alpha Flight is Walter Langowski,
who, like the Hulk, was exposed to gamma rays -- but instead
of turning green, he turned orange and hairy, and took on
which codename in recognition of the First Nations legend
he now resembled?
A3. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/alphA3.png
Jean-Paul and Jeanne-Marie Beaubier are Quebecois twins
with flight and super-speed powers, but since comics always
wants more, she suffers from dissociative identity disorder
and he was the first Marvel superhero to come out as gay
(in 1992). They're also both mutants, so at various times
they've both been X-Men. Give us either of their codenames.
* B. Science -- SHARK ROUND!
B1. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/sharB1.jpg
This species of shark is found primarily around the central
Pacific islands and is second only to the great white for
most recorded attacks on humans.
B2. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/sharB2.jpg
This is the largest species of shark, typically weighing
about 21 tons, and unlike most sharks it feeds on plankton
and other small organisms.
B3. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/sharB3.jpg
This shark is sometimes called the bonito shark, and has
the top recorded swimming speed of any shark, able to reach
sprints of 70 km/h.
* C. Geography -- Toronto Parks
C2. Which Toronto park that opened in 1860 was named in honor
of the ruling monarch at the time?
* D. Entertainment -- The Muppets
D1. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/muppD1.jpg
The Country Trio, an act on "The Muppet Show", are all based
on original Muppeteers. Jim Henson is the left Muppet;
Dave Goelz is on the right. The center Muppet is based on
the Muppeteer who first performed Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy
and Yoda, as well as being the director of Trading Places.
Who is he?
D2. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/muppD2.jpg
What is this Muppet's name?
D3. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/muppD3.jpg
The Jim Henson Co., which creates and designs all Muppets,
created this acclaimed early-2000s sci-fi show where numerous
characters were portrayed by Muppets and Muppet technology
was extensively used for special effects. What was this
show called?
* F. History -- 2SLGBTQ Rights
F1. Blake Desjarlais is the first 2-Spirited person to be

Questions about scientific processes, both purposeful and
accidental, which result in bodies being preserved for a long time.
C1. Prehistoric animals and insects get stuck in tree sap,
which, over millennia, hardens into a substance which is
often used as a gemstone. What substance is this?

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-12-02,
and should be interpreted accordingly.
On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.
All questions were written by members of What She Said, and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2024-08-30
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition

http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:deco/9A.jpg
Pretty easy: we'll show you a picture of a dog, and you tell us
what breed that dog is.
A1. What's this? http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:9/dogA1.jpg
A2. What's this? http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:9/dogA2.jpg
A3. What's this? http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:9/dogA3.jpg
* B. Volcanoes
(This category goes FOOM)
http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:deco/9B.jpg
Three questions about volcanoes, all strictly of the molten lava
kind rather than the baking soda and vinegar variety.
B1. Which planet has the largest volcano in the solar system?
B2. Rising 30,000 feet from its base on the ocean floor, what
is the tallest volcano in the world?
B3. Within 300, how many volcanoes on the Earth are currently
considered to be active?
* C. Preservation
(Of the non-food variety)
http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:deco/9C.jpg
Questions about scientific processes, both purposeful and
accidental, which result in bodies being preserved for a long time.
C1. Prehistoric animals and insects get stuck in tree sap,
which, over millennia, hardens into a substance which is
often used as a gemstone. What substance is this?
* D. Sedimentary Rocks
(God gave sedimentary rock n'roll to you) http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:deco/9D.jpg
Sedimentary rocks are rocks which are formed when loose mineral or
biological particles are compacted together into rocks over time.
Three questions about the rocks which are just lots of smaller
rocks.
D1. This sedimentary rock usually forms from loose shell and
coral debris, and within calm, warm water.
D2. This sedimentary rock forms from the compaction of mud and
silt particles into rock. Because the mud it transforms
from often contains organic deposits, nowadays deposits of
this rock frequently contain oil and natural gas deposits.
D3. When limestone forms from primarily silicate particles,
we refer to it as diatomite. When it forms from
primarily calcite particles, we refer to it as this, both
scientifically and in its day-to-day use.
* E. NASA Acronyms
(This category is FUBAR)
http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:deco/9E.jpg
NASA has acronyms for just about everything! Three questions
about some of NASA's more common VAAs (Verbal Acceleration Aids).
E1. What did LEM stand for?
E2. What did LRV stand for? (HINT: you drove it.)
E3. If you were to refer to "MCC Houston", what would MCC
stand for?

* A. Arts and Literature -- Alpha Flight
A1. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/alphA1.png
Alpha Flight are Marvel Comics' premier Canadian super-team.
One of the original members is Eugene Judd, a hirsute
dwarf acrobat. What is his codename?
A2. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/alphA2.png
Another original member of Alpha Flight is Walter Langowski,
who, like the Hulk, was exposed to gamma rays -- but instead
of turning green, he turned orange and hairy, and took on
which codename in recognition of the First Nations legend
he now resembled?
A3. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/alphA3.png
Jean-Paul and Jeanne-Marie Beaubier are Quebecois twins
with flight and super-speed powers, but since comics always
wants more, she suffers from dissociative identity disorder
and he was the first Marvel superhero to come out as gay
(in 1992). They're also both mutants, so at various times
they've both been X-Men. Give us either of their codenames.
* B. Science -- SHARK ROUND!
B1. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/sharB1.jpg
This species of shark is found primarily around the central
Pacific islands and is second only to the great white for
most recorded attacks on humans.
B2. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/sharB2.jpg
This is the largest species of shark, typically weighing
about 21 tons, and unlike most sharks it feeds on plankton
and other small organisms.
B3. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/sharB3.jpg
This shark is sometimes called the bonito shark, and has
the top recorded swimming speed of any shark, able to reach
sprints of 70 km/h.
* C. Geography -- Toronto Parks
C1. In which park, named after a former mayor, would you find
the Sharon, Lois & Bram Playground?
C2. Which Toronto park that opened in 1860 was named in honor
of the ruling monarch at the time?
C3. Which park was designated as Parks Canada's first national
urban park in 2015?
* D. Entertainment -- The Muppets
D1. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/muppD1.jpg
The Country Trio, an act on "The Muppet Show", are all based
on original Muppeteers. Jim Henson is the left Muppet;
Dave Goelz is on the right. The center Muppet is based on
the Muppeteer who first performed Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy
and Yoda, as well as being the director of Trading Places.
Who is he?
D2. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/muppD2.jpg
What is this Muppet's name?
D3. See: http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/muppD3.jpg
The Jim Henson Co., which creates and designs all Muppets,
created this acclaimed early-2000s sci-fi show where numerous
characters were portrayed by Muppets and Muppet technology
was extensively used for special effects. What was this
show called?
* E. Sports -- Current Maple Leafs Players
In each case, name them.
E1. Who's this?
http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/leafE1.jpg
E2. Who's this?
http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/leafE2.jpg
E3. Who's this?
http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/f:10/leafE3.jpg
* F. History -- 2SLGBTQ Rights
F1. Blake Desjarlais is the first 2-Spirited person to be
elected to hold federal office in Canada. In which province
were they elected MP?
F2. In 1989, Denmark was the first country to legally recognize
same-sex relationships. They were called registered
partnerships which gave same-sex couples most of the same
rights as straight couples except for one. What were gay
couples notably not allowed to do?
F3. Lili Elbe was a Danish painter who is considered the
first person to undergo sex reassignment surgery (in 1931).
Who played her in a 2015 biopic?
