* Game 8, Round 7 - Miscellaneous - Loanwords
"English is a language that beats up other languages in the back
alley and steals their loose vocabulary" is a running joke among
linguists. We'll give you three words commonly used in English;
you tell us what language got beaten up in the back alley.
1. Trek, commando, aardvark.
2. Pilaf, fez, balaclava.
3. Nimrod, leviathan, rube.
4. Avatar, dinghy, karma.
5. Tycoon, futon, honcho.
6. Monsoon, wonton, lychee.
7. Mana, kiwi, tiki.
8. Nebbish, klutz, glitch.
9. Shindig, clan, bard.
10. Admiral, lemon, saffron.
* Game 8, Round 8 - Science - Forestry
10,000,000,000 acres of the world's land area is covered in forests.
The science of forestry has elements that belong to the biological,
physical, social, political, and managerial sciences. Here are
10 questions about them.
1. What is the term for the biological science of studying forests
and woodlands? It is comprised of the Latin word for forests and
woods, and the Ancient Greek term for "science of" or "study of".
2. Name the branch of forestry concerned with overall
administrative, legal, economic, and social aspects, as well
as scientific and technical aspects, such as silviculture,
forest protection, and forest regulation.
3. Give the two-word term for practice of intentionally setting a
fire to change the assemblage of vegetation and decaying material
in a landscape.
4. "<answer> Forests" are based on an approach that combines the
social, cultural and economic needs of local communities with
the long-term sustainability of large landscapes in which
forests are an important feature. They are typically a working
landscape of forests, farms, protected areas, rivers and towns.
The Eastern Ontario <answer> Forest is based in Kemptville,
Ontario. What word fills in the blank?
5. What is the term for the process in which the biological wealth
of a forest area is diminished, sometimes permanently, by a
factor or by a combination of factors? It does not involve a
reduction of the forest area, but rather a quality decrease in
its condition.
6. Reforestation is the natural or intentional restocking of
former forests. What is the term for the establishment of
a forest in an area where there was no forest or tree cover
before? There are three types of this: natural regeneration,
agroforestry, and tree plantations.
7. Deforestation threatens many forest ecosystems. It occurs
when humans remove trees from a forested area by cutting or
burning, either to harvest timber or to make way for farming.
Most deforestation today occurs in tropical forests. According
to the Union of Concerned Scientists, the vast majority of
tropical deforestation is the result of the production of
four commodities: wood, beef, and two others. Name *either*
of the others.
8. China's Great Green Wall, officially known as the Three-North
Shelter Forest or Belt, is a series of human-planted windbreaking
forest strips or shelterbelts. The project began in 1978 and
is expected to be completed around 2050, at which point it will
about 4500 kilometers in length. Its purpose is to provide
timber to the local population, and hold back the expansion
of what?
9. The Queen's Commonwealth Canopy began in 2015 with the aim of
establishing a global network of protected indigenous forests
throughout the Commonwealth of Nations. The largest forest in
the QCC by a significant margin is located in British Columbia
and covers 6,400,000 hectares, and is home to 1/4 of the world's
coastal temperate rainforest. Name this forest.
10. What is the word used in many northern countries, including
where its use originated, for the biome between the tundra
and the temperate forest, characterized by coniferous forests
consisting mostly of pines, spruces, and larches? In Canada,
"boreal forest" is used for this definition, and the word we are
seeking is used to describe the more barren areas approaching
the tree line and the tundra.
