The new video game studio will produce D&D video games.
Hasbro has announced a new video game studio in Montreal, with a new
focus on supporting D&D video games. The new studio, called Wizards of
the Coast Studios Inc. will focus on developing new content for the
Dungeons & Dragons franchise and expanding Hasbro's lineup of digital
games. The studio is expected to support 200 jobs. Dan Ayoub, the head
of the D&D franchise, will also run the new studio. Ayoub, you may
recall, has a long pedigree in video game development.

The new studio will not replace Invoke Studios, Hasbro's other studio
located in Montreal. The new office for Wizards of the Coast Studios
Inc. will be located next to Invoke Studios.

Hasbro has big aspirations for expanding the D&D franchise via video
games. Several D&D video games are in development at third party studios
and now we're seeing an in-house expansion of the D&D digital portfolio.
One obvious speculation is that the new studio will work on a Baldur's
Gate 4, which Hasbro has promised will eventually be released following
the mammoth success of Baldur's Gate 3.

Hasbro flip-flops so often on whether it wants to own/control its
software studios or whether it's happier just licensing the property
to third-parties and letting them take the risk it's hard to keep
track. Honestly, I think they're better off doing the latter, but its
pretty clear that Hasbro _still_ has hopes on making D&D a multimedia
franchise with universal appeal; something akin to the Marvel
Cinematic Universe, with games and toys and books and movies and
tv-shows and party hats and theatrical productions and beers and, and,
    and...

I don't think that's really doable --D&D had its moment in the sun
five-ten years ago, when it reemerged from the shadows and people's
nostalgia briefly pushed it up from 'that geeky game I played back in
middle school'-- but I don't think it's sustainable without radically
changing the character of the game. D&D will always have some appeal,
but I think Hasbro needs to lessen their expectations of how far the
    game will go.

Which probably includes, no, don't invest a hundred million into
spinning up a new video-game developer and expect that making that
money back is a sure thing. Instead, stick to making the tabletop game
and let other software publishers make the digital games.

I think they got REAL lucky with BG3. I seriously doubt anyone else can manage to deliver anything similar. How modible it is also makes it
unlikely anything else will overtake it in the next decade or two, as
one can just mod it to be what you want.

The chances of a studio owned/operated by WotC/Hasbro even releasing
anything are next to nil with their track record.

Well, BG3 was made by a group of artists who loved the game and
setting and wanted to make a great, fun product that would please all
the fans. It was an obvious labor of love.

Hasbro wants to make money. And maybe use the video-game to leverage
D&D into other markets. If any of their video games succeed, it will
be /despite/ Hasbro's involvement, not because of it.

I think the main problem is that Hasbro really wants (needs even) to
make money, and DnD as a roleplaying game just isn't all that
profitable. It's the big fish in the roleplaying game pond, sure, but
it's a very small pond. They are in the weird situation of having a
property that's a household name and a popular game, which still isn't
making even close to the money they need to make.

I don't think that's really doable --D&D had its moment in the sun
five-ten years ago, when it reemerged from the shadows and people's

They need to, but they won't, because from what we heard the last few
years DnD was one of the few properties they have that made them money.
And I don't understand how you can mess up a big business like Hasbro
quite so badly. The My Little Pony reboot was an immense success, and
they went from being a cultural touchstone to completely irrelevant in
    the blink of an eye.

Yes, but that would include sharing the money they can earn with it,
    andthey can't have that. they
