    From Catrike Ryder@Soloman@old.bikers.org to rec.bicycles.tech on Sat Jan 31 09:20:27 2026
    From Newsgroup: rec.bicycles.tech

What??? Lows below feeezing tonight with possible snow flurries??

It will get up into the mid fifties today but I'm one cyclist who will
not be riding today... there won't be many if any cyclists out today
    with 40 MPH gusts predicted.

Haven't ridden in nearly two weeks. Hovering on either side
    of zero F here.

Apparently, actual life is not quite like the movie: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0497116

I've become a real hot house flower. 55 degrees is my bottom temp
limit for riding. If I cannot complete the entire ride at 55 or more,
I won't be riding. On the other hand I recall when I first came to
Florida, riding into Ruskin for breakfast at 40 degrees in shorts and
    short sleeves.

FWIW, back in Wisconsin in my motorcycling days, 55 degrees was my
bottom limit for riding the motorcycles to work.

Temperature is relative ie what one is used to, plus wind humidity and all that, been for ride around Heathrow Gravel with temperatures just in single digits Centigrade or just sub 50 Fahrenheit but still cool enough that 3
layers plus waterproof boots where needed did have a few flooded tracks so
lot of cold water and wet legs, which does cool one down. Boots stayed dry
with being waterproof and having a cuff to keep it so, but legs got wet.

Others did have wet feet as winter boots are investment and all that.

One of my issues is that I'm blessed/cursed as a sweater. I sweat when
I'm active even when I'm cold. If I get sweaty at 40/50 degrees, I get
really cold. I'm more comfortable riding at 90 degrees then at 50.
Moving along at 12/14 MPH I'll keep dry, but stopping for a few
minutes and I'll be soaked. On typical 40 mile ride at 75/80degrees
I'll drink at least three, maybe four 24 oz bottles of water. The
Catrike is rigged to carry 7. 15 years ago when I was routinely riding
70 or 80 miles I carries six bottles and had to refill several on my
    routes.

ThatrCOs really a wicking thing, than insulation, ie a good base layer that
can keep you dry will also keep you warm. Some do better than others, and
they definitely degrade over time, ie being repeatedly washed.
