The bike on the left is mine. I was delighted to be able to go
up there so late in the year and in such sunny weather.

Has any of you already been up there, too?

    - what brand bike is it?
    - July 10 is late in the year?

Why are so few leaving the USA for a more "rational country?"

That large rear cog is massive!

    Indeed it is. 10-52 teeth.

    two questions
    - what brand bike is it?
    - July 10 is late in the year?
    October 7 is late.

Ah...7.10 is july 10 in the US, october 7 in rational countries.

Correct. I should have used the ISO notation 2025-10-07.

October 7 is indeed quite late in the year. But we were lucky
and had good weather throughout our entire vacation in France.
There could hardly be better conditions for cycling up there:
sunny, clear visibility, little wind, and not too high
    temperatures.

I designed and built that bike myself in early 2023, based on a
titanium gravelbike frame, using gearing components from SRAM.

My design is quite similar to the design shown here:

    <https://www.sram.com/en/life/stories/the-SRAM-AXS-adventure-build>

Actually, I built two of these bikes, one for my wife, another
one for me. 10-52 on the rear plus a chainring between 40 and 32
teeth. We are down to 32 teeth on my wifes bike and 36 teeth for
me. We aren't getting any younger.

Unlike in this story, our bikes are only intended for road
cycling; we don't ride on gravel paths. That's why I fitted road
tires, 28 mm Conti Grand Prix 5000 S-TR for my bike, 32 mm
Pirelli P Zero Race on her bike.

A better picture of the bike from autumn 2023

taken at a village atop a hill in our region, both named
    Aremberg.

I took the photo from Kapellenstrasse, looking south, which is
what we are looking at here.

This round trip from our home to Aremberg is about 140 kilometers
long, with a cumulative elevation gain of 1,850 meters. I did it
    again in spring 2024.

Looks like a nice place to visit but I'd hate to live there. Just kidding.
