Smart people worked that problem already and found a solution:

    https://legallysociable.com/2025/10/01/record-office-vacancy-rate-in-chicagos-loop/

"The vacancy rate in the Loop was 24.7% in the second
    quarter of 2025 "

'Go away' is not a victimless phenomenon. The free spending
administration blew through all budget limits again. Since
the office buildings aren't bringing in enough property tax,
the burden has fallen on black homeowners mostly on the west
side but some south side as well.

    https://therealdeal.com/chicago/2025/12/11/chicago-homeowners-hear-why-property-tax-bills-skyrocketed/

The most severe increases (double, even 2.5x last year) are
in very poor neighborhoods. One might describe current
    policy as 'bayonet the wounded'.

I closed the popup and had no trouble reading it.

    Correct, it wasn't a paywall.

WRT tax policy, the devil is in the details. As the right wing in this
country is all-too-often gleeful to shout, the taxes in terms of dollar amounts in this country are paid for by the rich - Most estimates claim
the top 10% in the US pays 80% of the taxes. the same is still true in chicago.

    As your article notes
    - "Home values in many poor neighborhoods have finally recouped the
value they had before the Great Recession, according to the report. And
since their value is rising faster than homes in more expensive
neighborhoods, their tax bills have risen the quickest."

-rCLChicago residents who had seen their home values plummet during the
Great Recession now are seeing values, and their taxes, skyrocket,rCY

    - "About 5,300 homeowners who owed nothing last year are getting a bill
this year, according to the report, because their assessed home values
now exceed the value of their exemptions."

    - "Cook County suburbs were largely spared from large increases because
their properties had been reassessed in prior years, according to the
    report."

Therefore the claim "Since the office buildings aren't bringing in
enough property tax, the burden has fallen on black homeowners mostly on
the west side but some south side as well" is misleading at best, and I
    read it as intentionally inflammatory.

There's obviously a lot wrong with this policy. A lot of states put in
laws that prohibit property taxes increases above a certain amount for
exactly reasons like this (In MA it's %2.5, but can be overridden if
there is a popular vote via referendum to override it).

It would be commical to see the blatant hypocrisy of the right wingers
all these years pearl-clutching that the rich deserve tax breaks so they
can stimulate the economy, then complain that redistributing the tax
burden is unfair to lower-income demographics if it weren't for the fact
that it proves how devastating 'flat tax' policy is to the lower income demographics.
