Mile Marker 203, troopers said. The electronic bicycle was traveling eastbound on the left shoulder when it attempted to cross both
lanes of traffic, entering the path of a semitruck in the right

roadway and struck a speed limit sign.

The bicyclist, a 63-year-old Warrenton man, was pronounced dead at

Traffic cameras on I-70 showed significant backups near the crash
scene. Both eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed for several

Served him right. Assholes riding ebikes think the rules of the road

In Illinois bikes are not allowed on the Interstate. Anyone who would
ride on an interstate is nuts at least around here. My question is that
are there interstates out West that are reasonably safe or possibly the
only way to get between some place? I recall years ago 2 lane instate in
    maybe Idaho?

    Yes and yes.

The image above actually is on an Illinois Interstate.

And yes some western States allow vehicles (including
bicycles) prohibited elsewhere because, as you note, there's
    no reasonable alternate route.

That makes sense in uk have roads that ideally would be motorways so only
motor vehicles and ones capable of certain speeds, but is no reasonable alternative, or possibly any alternative so they remain as A roads, not particularly nice places to cycle and but legal, some are used by TT folks
as they are fast courses, due to passing traffic often.

I think that there are too mzny frontage roads that occasionally slip out onto the Freeway. We have bicycle (usually protected) lanes on our bridge systems and even bridges that you must cross in the traffic lanes. The Alameda Tube must be used even though there is only room for one bike in one direction. If approaching another bike, one of you has to hold your bike over the rail out over traffic. I normally do that because I won't drop it all the way down into the moving traffic. The traffic is about ten feet below so there's no danger of hitting a truck while doing that.
There is one route where bicycles are squeezed out into freeway speed traffic. It is only about 30 or 40 feet so I wait for an opening and ride like hell, After that, the narrowest shoulder is about 20 feet so it is safe when you get past that section so I have used it a couple of times.
