We had steel-cut oats (the retronym for oatmeal, now that "oatmeal"
means rolled oats) for breakfast yesterday. The proper measure of
porridge grain per person is a quarter cup,but the package said
one-third and I used one third. After breakfast for two and a
generous serving of oatmeal mixed with an egg and lots of seasoning
(including fried winter-onion bulbils and stems) and fried as a patty
for lunch, there was still a lot of oatmeal in the pot.

So this morning I added a bike bottle (one British pint) of water, a
stalk of rhubarb sliced very thin, an eighth of a teaspoon of Lite
Salt (equal parts of sodium- and postassium chloride), and a
tablespoon of ground ginger. I put on a tight lid and brought it to a
boil over very low heat. When I noticed that it was boiling, I turned
off the heat and added a belated tablespoon of brown sugar, after
verifying that we are out of molasses.

Come lunch time, I'll strain off the liquid to drink on Thurday's
curtailed ride and eat the seasoned rhubarb with my lunch.

No tea Thursday. Last week was very stressful, so it will be a week
before I dare to skip my nap.

And then it will rain for three days. But Thursday is scheduled for
warm, dry, and very little wind, I need to go to the license bureau,
and the Sprawlmart loop is a reasonable length.

A tablespoon of ginger was definitely too much.

    4:31 p.m.

I sliced another stalk of rubarb, and put it, the stuff filtered out
of the switchel, and a cup of water into a saucepan and put it over
    low heat.

The rhubarb is lacking in flavor; I can eat slices of it raw, and the
switchel isn't the least bit tart.

    8:20 p.m.

The second stalk of rhubarb did the trick. I was beginning to think
that I'd have to add some vinegar, lemon juice, ascorbic acid, or sour
    salt.

I just ate the rhubarb puree as a bedtime snack, and in five minutes
I'll have three slices of potato fried in buttered tallow.

I don't recall whether it was butter or ghee, but it's ghee by now
    anyway.

Timer just sounded. Time to send and eat.
