The above Usenet service has announced that it will be discontinued as from 30th September 2027. Current users can continue to use it until then
    without further payment.

In the event that I am still alive (IrCOm 87) and still compos mentis I shall have to look for a new server (if Usenet itself continues to exist).

For many years, I've used "eternal september"* (eternal-september.org),
    and it's been very reliable.

    * It's an in-joke from back when the Internet was basic and pretty much reserved to the universities. The usenet groups were pretty civilised
with a good signal-to-noise ration...except when you got a bunch of new
users who didn't understand the etiquette. You really noticed September
as a lot of new students would flood onto Usenet and be annoying for a
while. In 1993, someone observed that with AOL and the much wider access
to the Internet (a good thing), there was now a constant stream of new
users which mean it was like we were living through a never-ending bunch
of newbies and, hence, an eternal September.

Of course, Usenet was one of the big games in town (along with things
like archie and online forums and MUDs) as the web was just bursting
onto the scene (and very basic) and ecommerce wasn't a thing. Now, I'm astounded Usenet still clings on.

I was on Giganews, but moved to eternal-september this year.

I tried it in parallel with my current NIN for a few days while
considering whether I should save 10 euro per year. In that period ES
missed a post or two so I abandoned it - but perhaps I was unlucky.
It's probably the most reasonable option after NIN retires.

I was on Giganews for a good while, but I felt that over time the server connections weren't as good as it had been. Switched to Eweka two years
ago, and don't regret the 10 (or so) Euro monthly cost.

I bought 50 GB of data from Astranews about 15 years ago, still using
that :-) if you don't download binaries it lasts forever...

A well-regarded Usenet provider is newsdemon:

(click on the currency most suitable to you).

50GB of data for a one-off payment of $3 or -u2:40 will last forever on text-only newsgroups.

Another vote to ES. Ive used them for years. Spent time on GoogleGroups
before that went belly-up but alway maintained my ES account.

One more good thing is that itrCOs non-binary groups only. So it doesnrCOt get bogged down with rips and porn.

Ah, that's a damn shame... I used them for a few years a while ago,
excellent service. Shame to see them shut it down, must have been an
incredibly hobbyist/niche endeavour for a long time now - maybe whoever on
the staff there (it's at a university, right?) was running it has reached
the age where they can't be doing with it/are due to retire and there's
no-one younger there able or willing to take it on?

Eternal September will hopefully still be around then, and for years to
come! Would hate to see Usenet finally go pop and everybody give up on
    it...
