    What did you watch?

I watched "All About Mormons," South Park s07e12. Something reminded me
of it, and I turned it on. I've seen that one a bunch of times, but it's
still amusing, especially when Gary rips Stan a new one at the end.

I also watched some American Dad reruns. I looked for a movie, but
didn't see anything appealing. I'm idly wandering around IMDB now.

    I watched:

Frankenstein (4K disc) 1931 horror movie directed by James Whale and
starring Colin Clive and Dr. Frankenstein and Boris Karloff as the
monster. I watched with a pretty interesting trivia track.

Bride of Frankenstein (4K disc) 1935 sequel directed by James Whale and starring Colin Clive and Dr. Frankenstein and Boris Karloff as the
monster. This was my first time watching this movie. I was surprised
that the scene with the blind man was in this movie, because of "Young Frankenstein" I assumed that scene was from the original.

Young Frankenstein (blu-ray) 1974 comedy directed by Mel Brooks and
starring Gene Wilder as Dr. Frankenstein, I mean Frankensteene, and
    Peter Boyle as the monster.

They could film on *film* in 1931. ;-)

Often some of the best 4K transfers are from movies filmed on actual
film. 70mm in particular truly pops in 4K.

Of course the studio has to be willing to spend the movie for a descent transfer, but for many classic / prestige films, they will spend the money.

Not as far as I know. They seem to ridicule Mormonism, but with
affection. They described their Broadway musical as "a love letter from atheism to religion."

That show had the same final message as the South Park episode: Yes, all

Well yeah as film has more information than video. Digital video was
    created to solve what problem?

Arthur simply would have built a 35 mm projection booth.

Speaking of which, if the nitrate film stock is actually available, the
reason why building codes required fireproof projection booths, the
silvers will shimmer and pop although it cannot quite recreate projecton
of a nitrate print. Safer, though.

This was probably only my second time watching the original Frankenstein
all the way through from beginning to end. While I wasn't always giving
it my full attention, what stood out were the relationship details
between Dr. Frankenstein and his love interest. I wasn't expecting
that, but I noticed it more this time because I remembered it being in
the later remakes. So I realized that relationship dynamic has always
been a thing in the movies all the way back to the 30s.

I was honestly waiting for the scene with the blind man and when it
didn't materialized, I thought I must have missed it and rewound back
the movie looking for it. LOL.

On the trivia they talked a lot about how the movie was found to be
extremely scary for 1930s audiences which I found a bit amusing. They
also said the movie wasn't meant to have a sequel, and even killed off
both Frankenstein and the monster (but then re shot the ending so the
monster lived), but it was one of the most profitably movies ever for
the time so they quickly backtracked on the no sequel plans and cranked
    one out.

For my first time watching the original Bride of Frankenstein, I
*really* should have paid more attention but it was almost background
noise. That being said, I was really surprised by the plot which was
nothing like I had assumed. First of all, the movie introduces a new
evil doctor who teams up with the monster and forces Frankenstein to
create the Bride. I had always assumed Frankenstein *wanted* to create
the Bride. And there was this whole side story where the evil Doctor
created these miniature humans. I'm not at all sure if he actually made
them or just shrunk normal size people, but it was an interesting
    diversion from the main story.

With Young Frankenstein, that's a movie that I've never particularly
cared that much for. But I'm a Mel Brooks fan, so what am I going to
do, not watch it? Anyway this was probably the first time I watched it
with a bit of realization that when it was made the audience would have
been familiar with the original movies and would have got all of those references. For myself, not watching the original movies before seeing
the parody, almost all of the direct references went right over my head.
This time I was actually able to catch the references which added a
nice touch for the first time while watching.

I have a few more "Frankenstein" movies in my collection I plan to watch
this weekend in preparation for the upcoming bid budget Christian Bale version.

But speaking of pairing movies, I've been slowly working my way through
a classic Universal monster box set. I think the only monsters left are
The Mummy and The Invisible Man. But I now have plans in the next few
years to crack open the box set and watch the classic monsters featured
in "The Monster Squad" then watch "The Monster Squad." I've never come
close to doing that before. I'd never even watched most of the original monster movies that "The Monster Squad" references. So I'm thinking
finally watching the classic movies first then seeing them all team up
in the same movie might add an extra layer of enjoyment.

That's common with older horror movies, IMO. People then were more used
to exercising their imaginations. Today, we watch more passively and
expect the movie to do most of the work.

Anyway this was probably the first time I watched it
with a bit of realization that when it was made the audience would have
been familiar with the original movies and would have got all of those
references. For myself, not watching the original movies before seeing
the parody, almost all of the direct references went right over my head.
This time I was actually able to catch the references which added a
nice touch for the first time while watching.

I have a few more "Frankenstein" movies in my collection I plan to watch
this weekend in preparation for the upcoming bid budget Christian Bale
    version.

The Abbott and Costello films are worth watching as is the Yvonne
    Strahotski version

I don't think I've ever watched any of the classic monster team up
movies. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I've ever watched
Abbott and Costello. It's hard to know for sure because it's hard to distinguish between did I watch an old rerun on TV when I was a kid, or
just a clips of their act here and there. Although I do remember
reading "Who's on First?" in middle school.

I just checked..."Dracula (Bela Lugosi) wants to put porter's (Lou
Costello) brain in monster's body." That actually sounds kind of
    interesting. And it's airing tomorrow...on a channel I don't get. LOL

I'll keep in mind when I get around to watching the Monster Squad. It
might be on a free streaming channel by then.
