The Corporation for Public Broadcasting voted Monday to dissolve itself
after Republicans in Congress rescinded $1.1 billion in federal
funding, cutting off the primary government revenue stream that has
    long sustained NPR and PBS.

The CPB began winding down operations in August, notifying 100
employees that most staff positions would be eliminated by the end of
the fiscal year on September 30, with MondayAs vote making the closure official.

In a press release, the CPB said the decision resulted directly from oCongressAs rescission of all of CPBAs federal funding and comes after sustained political attacks that made it impossible for CPB to continue operating as the Public Broadcasting Act intended.o

President Donald Trump formally called on Congress to cancel public broadcaster funding over the next two years via a rescission request
after the 2024 election. Congress approved that plan in mid-July,
taking back $1.1 billion earmarked for public broadcasters over the
    next two years.

oIt is very important that all Republicans adhere to my Recissions
[sic] Bill and, in particular, DEFUND THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC
BROADCASTING (PBS and NPR), which is worse than CNN & MSDNC put
together,o Trump said in a post on Truth Social in mid-July.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was created in 1967 to support
radio stations in underserved areas. In recent years, conservatives
have criticized the agency for funneling millions of dollars annually
    to NPR and PBS.

As The Daily Wire previously reported, a Media Research Center (MRC)
study found the taxpayer-funded PBS program oWashington Week with The Atlantico consistently exhibited a staggering 93% negative bias against Republicans and the Trump administration over three months, despite
claiming to provide oobjectiveo political coverage.

oThe panelists spent 83 minutes opining on Republicans, focusing on
Trump and his administration, in 93% negative fashion (77 minutes
negative, six minutes positive),o the MRC report reads.

House Republicans grilled NPR chief executive Katherine Maher in July
on the organizationAs bias against conservatives, focusing in
particular on the cover-up of the Hunter Biden laptop story during the
2020 election u claims Maher attempted to walk back.

Former NPR senior business editor Uri Berliner, who resigned after
publishing an essay critical of the networkAs leftward shift, was
referenced by Republican lawmakers as further evidence of the outletAs
bias, The Daily Wire previously reported.

In a text message to The New York Times, Berliner wrote that he
believes the organization should oopenly acknowledge and embrace its progressive orientationo and decline federal support, contradicting
MaherAs claims of NPRAs supposed objectivity.

Things people actually wanted, like classic Sesame Street, didn't need
    the support.

There is something to be said for funding commercially unsuccessful art,
since some of it proves over time to be great. We no longer have a lot
of private art patrons, so it seems natural for government to fill the
gap. On the other hand, the stuff the government funds very seldom
    proves great over time.

$1.1 billion divided by 100 employees is only $11 million per employee per year.

CPB budget for grants were something like 2/3 operations of the license holder's public radio or public tv station, and 1/3 for programming. In
major markets, with a lot more moochathons, local broadcasting will
survive. There is no sustainable path forward for public radio or
television in rural areas -- places that voted heavily for Trump -- as
the lack of population means there won't be sufficient fundraising. Now,
the subsidy could easily come from local taxes if any state legislature
wanted that model but I doubt any will.

National public broadcasting is essentially syndication, the opposite of
how the national commercial television networks ABC, CBS, and NBC work
in which the local television license holder is paid to "clear" prime
time. Fox has a revenue split.

In public television, the PBS affiliate chooses programming and pays for
it based on local population. All PBS programs are produced by one
member station (or if foreign programming, purchased by one member
station), then offered nationally. Major programming sources are WGBH,
WNET, WTTW, and KQED. There is a recommended national programming
schedule but it's not contractual. The local public broadcast station
can move prime time programming to other time slots or not broadcast it
    at all.

There are other program sources like American Public Television that
distribute domestic and foreign programming. Since we were discussing
Doc Martin in the other thread, this was foreign programming offered
through APT. These don't require a specific PBS member station to
    sponsor.

Public radio is similar in that it works like syndication but only
specific programs originate at member stations and there are three
networks. With NPR membership, the local public radio station must carry national news programs like Morning Edition and All Things Considered,
and they will typically carry national news at the top of the hour.
Everything else is pick and choose. The other two major programming
sources are PRX (which is now a podcasting model in whichs shows are
    available for broadcast) and APM.

In a few cases, small market stations are carrying a lot less national programming. There are stations that dropped their national affiliations entirely as they simply could not afford the fees.

When Congress was egalitarian during the Johnson and Nixon
administrations, they were making television and radio available to
viewers and listeners in rural areas, like past programs of Rural Free
Delivery (mail), and rural electrification and rural telephony. It was
once considered to be a critical national priority to enhance rural communication and electrical infrastructure. Note that both telephone
    and electric share line poles.

This is just another instance of Trump deliberately harming rural
Americans, his constituents. Sure there's an argument that federal
funding is inappropriate, but a transisition to no subsidy at all is
just going to result in complete loss of broadcasting.

They are still coming for the post office.
