Zelensky picks new adviser Trump called 'toxic' and 'terrible' ahead of Paris talks with Witkoff, Kushner

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet Tuesday in Paris with US peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner -- one day after naming a
critic of President Trump as his new economic adviser, calling her "highly skilled," despite Trump describing her as "toxic" and "terrible."
    ....
It's unclear what effect Zelensky's choice of former Canadian finance
minister Chrystia Freeland as his new economic adviser will have on the Russia-Ukraine peace talks, but the US president has repeatedly made clear that he detests her.

Freeland resigned as then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's finance chief in December 2024 after clashing with Trump over his tariff threats.

Trump said at the time: "Her behavior was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!"

If you're looking to me to defend Freeland you've come to the wrong
place. I don't like the woman or indeed any of the lot that surrounded
Trudeau during the horrific decade we've had since Trudeau was elected. Honestly, I question why Zelensky has hired her. She, like most Canadian Liberals, has little if any sympathy for the idea of fiscal
responsibility. Virtually the entire lot of them prioritize "free
stuff", growing the bureaucracy, and ballooning already high deficits.
And virtue-signalling. I am at a loss to imagine what she is going to
bring to Ukraine that they actually need or want. I have enormous
respect for Zelensky but what he's thinking here escapes me, especially
given Trump's detestation of her. Zelensky needs to stay on Trump's good
side so hiring someone he loathes makes no sense to me.

Of course you're absolutely free to continue your infatuation with her
and more power to you in that regard.

on the other hand, getting her to Ukraine and out of Canada
means a lot less publicity and local power for her.. So yeah,
    Trump might be happy..

Her local power is about to be zero. She's giving up her seat in
    Parliament in the near future or so the pundits are predicting;
otherwise it will be seen by many as a conflict of interest. According
to *her*, she was very effective at thwarting Trump at the last
NAFTA/CUSMA round of talks which is why he hates her. If Carney thinks
she was effective, I suppose it's possible he could bring her back as an adviser.

Apparently, her work for Zelensky will be as an UNPAID adviser so I'm
betting it won't last that long. She's got another gig lined up starting
July 1 at the foundation that runs the Rhodes scholarships. She'll be
based in the UK for that.
