I also liked the Christmas Carol grammar variant from that one.

Also, what's up with the racoon memes? Is it because of the
recent articles claiming that racoons start showing some signs
of domestication? (If I were a science fiction author, which I
am not, I would add a racoon pet jut for variety's sake, of
    course).

I bought a roll once. It was probably the best duct tape (used on a
lot of things, but not ducts) I ever had. Very tenacious.
But when I tried to replace, the store didn't have it.
So now I am back to ordinary duct tape. At least I am buying it in
various colors: red at present, next up: lime green. I can date some
of my repairs by the color of the tape!
I'm glad to hear they are still around.

You were not wrong. Duct Tape is used for taping Air Ducts together
at the joints to avoid leaking air and wasting power. Cotton duck may be
used to make some of it but that is just an ingredient not the product or
its original utility. Currently Duct Tape may use steel foil as the backing for the strong adhesive.

Don't do this! Use proper gaffer's tape: it will hurt much less when it
is removed and it won't leave goo behind like athletic tape. There should
be plenty of it around any TV or movie set.

Even gaffer's tape will leave a residue if it is attached
to a surface for a sufficiently long duration.

"Duck Tape" is actually a real product, although not made from or for >>>>>> ducks. It is made by a company called "Duck" and their tape products >>>>>> come in various colours, colours, and transparent.-a :-)

For most of my life, I thought 'duck tape' was a illiterate term
    for 'duct tape'.

    I was wrong.

Only in the last 10 years did I learn that the original product
used cotton duck, a fabric, as its base, and 'duck tape' was
    correct.

    pt

You were not wrong.a Duct Tape is used for taping Air Ducts together
at the joints to avoid leaking air and wasting power.a Cotton duck may be >>>> used to make some of it but that is just an ingredient not the product or >>>> its original utility.a Currently Duct Tape may use steel foil as the
    backing for the strong adhesive.

    bliss

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duct_tape#History

The term 'duck tape' goes back to 1906.
Its use for ductwork, and the term 'duct tape' seems to start in the 1950s. >>> The Duck Tape brand dates to 1971.

Of course the ussage indications are the same for either nomenclature:

I believe I have read books (not so much SF as police detective) where
    that is described as well.
And, by now, it may be happening in real life from time to time as
    well.

I think it is possible you are not distinguishing between "what the
audience is supposed to think" from "what is actually going on".
Remember: the map is /not/ the terrain.
