    I'm trying to recall a story from the mid to late 60s. It was a
    serial in Analog. SETI researchers got a message from space that
    instructed how to build a computer. One was built, and much excitement
    ensued when it had malign goals of its own. Does anyone recall this story?

    Sounds like _A For Andromeda_ except for the Analog part.
