    I seem to recall that this was a problem for the locals in a late Van
    Vogt novel, "The Darkness on Diamondia".

    A similar event in LA is the setting for a murder in a Michael Connolly
    novel, one of the Rene Ballard books, IIRC.

    "Celebratory gun fire" is such an amazingly stupid idea, especially since people tend to do it with live rounds, not blanks. Well, as the saying
    goes: "What comes up, must come down". And when it is a bullet, it might
    kill someone ... and yes, sadly, people have been killed by this.
