I was wondering, during dinner today, why Christians have this custom
of saying "grace" at meals.
Something to do with being thankful for food received? Because food is essential for life?
But it's not the only thing that's essential for life, is it? Water is
even more essential. Do Christians say grace before taking a drink of
water?
And for something even more essential: how about the oxygen in fresh
air. Do Christians say grace before taking each breath?
If not, why not?

I am not a Christian, but I sometimes give thanks to the species
someone (the smallest in mass someone in Cosma containing all the
species members) of the species that a food I am consuming comes
from.

Do you give thanks to the photosynthesizing species that the oxygen
you breathe comes from?

No.
Why not?
Is it because, to them, the oxygen you breathe is a noxious waste gas?
