While 88.47 of the votes cast were in favour, there is no mention of
what percentage of shareholders actually voted. For example if there
are 100,000 shareholders and 60,000 voted, then we have 53,082 votes
in favour. That is still over half of the shareholders in favour in
this example, but it is still possible that the number of votes in
favour is less that 50% of the total shareholder count (50% being the
threshold required to approve the sale).

I would have thought at least one journalist would have done the
    numbers because of this.

Journalists don't like actual facts. They prefer to use statistics
    without any context.

Over 80%, according to this eveningrCOs TVNZ news.

That was of those who voted. There was a report that Fonterra has
around 11,000 shareholders but it seems unlikely that all of them cast
    their votes.

If this is the news item you were referencing:

    https://www.1news.co.nz/2025/10/30/farmers-agree-to-sale-of-fonterras-consumer-brands/

there is no reference to the percentage of shareholders who voted,
only a reference to the percentage of votes in favour. If the turnout
was 5500 shareholders, then 88.47% (of 5500) in favour represents less
than 5000 shares - which is not a majority if there are 10,000
shareholders eligible to vote. Note that those who own Fonterra
Shareholders Fund shares are not eligible to vote.

It seems certain more than 5500 shareholders did vote, but I am
curious as to why the actual turnout is not published (it is also
missing from the Fonterra press release reporting the voting results).

So was it 80.001% or 100%? or something inbetween? It makes a different to
    the point under discussion.

A case for cases such as this is the farmers discussed the proposal and
the viewpoint was that it was going to go ahead, thus no need to vote.
