My subscription with individual.net is coming up for renewal soon and
after many, many years on Usenet, and in particular here on NSR, I will
be allowing it to lapse. Time to move on and take only positive memories
of my time here.

I don't think I could ever claim to be a member of the "slrn mafia", but
I did dabble with it (and slrnpull) years ago when I was quite active on Usenet. Nowadays I occasionally read some groups with Pan on Linux, but
don't post much at all. I monitor a few groups now (incl this one) via
a Usenet feed to my BBS. Yes, BBSes are still a thing... :-)

Anyway, I remember you from all those years ago, and how much you
supported 'slrn'. I was the guy who called people 'Windroids' a lot, in reference to my love for Linux. Thanks for all you did to help others
with slrn and with Usenet in general. Take care and best regards.

I am still using slrn. No reason not to since it work quickly and well.
(On Linux mind you not windows.)
Using it with eternal-september as my (free) netnews source.
Not sure why you do not just switch to that, rather than abandoning
Usenet.

I started following Usenet in the early 1990's via a corporate proxy when
I was at work, and a dialup ISP at home (on xrn IIRC).

I continue to follow a few Usenet groups via ($) Usenet Server.

FWIW, the trolling and spam in groups I follow has mostly moved to "social networks" like Facepuke (I escaped all that bedlam 10+ years ago).

I still find useful tips and information on the Usenet groups I follow.

Anyway: thanks again for being the Voice Of Reason for The Slrn Mafia. :)

You could always change to eternal-september,org for free.

I first used slrn in 1995 with a dial up UNIX shell account.
I complied it along with PINE email for use with my shell
account. I still use slrn & slrnpull on my linux system.
I did run slrn on windoze, but not slrnpull.

I think we've bumped into each other from time to time over the
years. In case I've never said so, I also appreciate your
thoughful contributions to the community. Thank you!

I started on Usenet in the early 90s via a shell account on a
VMS/DEC system that soon after morphed to a unix platform. I
think I started using slrn soon after, so it's probably been close
to 30 years.

I'm sure you're aware of other Usenet options, but I keep access
via various shell accounts. Panix has one for a fair price, and
the newsfeed is included. Nyx has a free option, and I think
they're still alive and kicking.

I'm an old guy, sure, a long-time Usenet user, and ages ago a news admin, but have been using slrn for only a couple of years.

Slackware distributions come with multiple newsreaders preinstalled. slrn was the one that checked all my boxes:

- NNTP authentication
- can kill articles by Injection-Info header
- actively maintained

Yes! I'm using it from Linux and Android (in a Termux shell).
My plans are to continue as usual on Linux, and if a good app
becomes available on Android, I'll switch to that.

Yes! I'm using it from Linux and Android (in a Termux shell).
My plans are to continue as usual on Linux, and if a good app
becomes available on Android, I'll switch to that.

FWIW, I've used PhoNews for occassional checking in on a few of my
newsgroups, though I couldn't tolerate its somewhat limited
capabilities for all my reading needs. It's not bad.

Still onboard, on Linux.

With slrn I feel I'm still in control of my PC
(for example, Thunderbird has some strange interactions
with Firefox).
slrn never freezes me at the console.
