Many newsreaders have the ability to display xface. If you are using tin, and your DISPLAY variable is set, it will pop up a window with a picture in it. Many people explicitly disable this however. Do a man on tin.

So the program was very broken for me..
Thankfully, I got a jerry-rigged script together that uses compface and imagemagick to display em for me!

Oh weird. Maybe you could try compiling it manually..
