Originally there were one-line fortunes distributed with v7, but the Berkeley distribution provided a more sophisticated database that could display multiline fortunes and an associated set of fortunes.

Over the years the fortunes databases have expanded and different OS releases have chosen different additions. But "The man who turns green has
eschewed protein" was in the original v7 file and I still see it printed out today on just about every fortunes program out there.

It's also wrong.

It's ALMOST an accurate quote from the film _Diva_ but if you actually
watch the film you'll see that I misquoted it. I had been using it as
my .signature for nearly twenty years before someone pointed out to me
that I got the quote wrong. I figured at that point it was too late to
worry about it. Now it's nearly twenty years after they pointed that out.

I'm still using the Nagra IV, though. It still sounds great. And I
still love _Diva_.
