And "every time" is exactly how often?

I've got an iPhone 16 I bought 14 months ago, and my battery's "Health"
is still normal with a reported maximum capacity of 98%.

It easily works all day and I simply recharge it overnight.

Given that the iPhone 17e's reported video playback running time is 26
hours, I don't imagine you'll see much "desperation" from anyone who
    buys one.

Eh, I think I am going to get a regular 17 since 17e's specifications
weren't impressive. I really wished Apple would bring back its smaller
and lighter iPhones like 13 mini. :(

iPhone 17e Arrives: Apple Fixes Its Biggest Budget Mistakes
    -----------------------------------------------------------
MagSafe is back and storage is doubled as Apple eases into a busy
    week of announcements.

Apple has kicked off this week's highly-anticipated "flurry of
new products" by leading with one of the most obvious products:
    the iPhone 17e.

We've been expecting this latest entry in Apple's new "e-series"
budget iPhone lineup since only days after the original iPhone 16e
launched last year. While the specific timing was never a
certainty, Apple's decision to give a number to the iPhone SE's
spiritual successor made it almost a given that this would become
an annual update. On top of that, the rumor mill quickly began
buzzing about Apple's plans for a sequel.

By early 2026, there was enough smoke to indicate the iPhone 17e
was just around the corner, and it seems the only prediction the
rumor mill got wrong was the date; a reliable source pointed to a
February 19 launch, which seemed plausible as it would have marked
the one-year anniversary of the iPhone 16e, but that obviously
didn't happen. Of course, it's also possible Apple had discussed
the idea, but later decided to hold off to launch it alongside
everything else it has in store for this week. Timing is
    everything, after all.

What's New in the iPhone 17e
Apple formally unveiled the iPhone 17e in a newsroom announcement
this morning, giving it the relatively quiet debut that most of us
expected, while also making it feel like the opening act for the
rest of Apple's product announcements this week.

"iPhone 17e combines powerful performance and features our
users love at an exceptional value, making it a compelling
option for customers looking to upgrade to the iPhone 17
family. We know our customers want a product that will
last, and iPhone 17e delivers just that. With A19 for
incredible performance, double the entry storage, a
smarter camera system, and enhanced durability, iPhone 17e
is designed to stay fast, secure, and valuable for years to
    come.

    - Kaiann Drance,
Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing

Anyone who has been following the recent iPhone 17e rumors won't
find too many surprises here. The iPhone 17e is visually
indistinguishable from the iPhone 16e unless you opt for the
exclusive new soft pink color, and most of the relatively subtle
changes are under the hood. Here's a quick rundown.

    The Upgrades
While the iPhone 17e may not look like much has changed on the
outside, it's still packing in some nice quality-of-life
    improvements over its predecessor.

    1. A19 Chip: This was the one thing anyone could have guessed at
from the start. Last year's iPhone 16e featured more or less the
same A18 chip used in the iPhone 16, so the iPhone 17e really
had nowhere else to go except to adopt the latest A19 chip from
the iPhone 17. Besides, that's also the same playbook Apple
followed for three generations of iPhone SE that came before.
The A19 chip here is likely a binned version, like last year's
A18 version, but it still brings the Neural Accelerators that
debuted on the iPhone 17. However, it doesn't appear to make any
differences in efficiency or battery life, as Apple promises the
same 26 hours of video playback.

    2. MagSafe Charging: Last year's iPhone 16e omitted MagSafe,
presumably as a cost-cutting measure. Perhaps Apple thought it
could get away with this as the iPhone SE had never adopted it
either, but it was a conspicuous difference. Thankfully, this
year's model fixes that, but Apple has still cut a small corner:
while the more expensive iPhone models can handle MagSafe
charging speeds of 22W or more, the iPhone 17e only supports the
15W speeds that haven't been standard since the iPhone 15 lineup.
Still, that's twice as fast as the iPhone 16e, which didn't
support MagSafe at all and was therefore stuck at the older
    7.5W Qi wireless charging.

    3. Double the Storage: In a world of rising memory prices, it's
nice to see that Apple isn't holding back the iPhone 17e. Apple
raised the bar for the iPhone 17 last fall, putting in 256 GB of
storage without increasing the starting price, and now it's done
the same for the budget model.

    4. C1X Modem: The iPhone 16e was the first to introduce Apple's own
in-house 5G modem chip, the C1, so it was a safe bet that this
year's model would get the enhanced C1X that debuted on the
iPhone Air a few months ago. Apple notes that it's up to
2x faster than the C1 and uses 30 percent less energy than the
Qualcomm chips in the iPhone 16 Pro - an interesting comparison
to that older model -abut like the A19 it doesn't translate into
any promises of longer battery life.

    5. The "Fusion" Camera: Apple is now branding the iPhone 17e camera
system as a "48MP Fusion" versus the "2-in-1 camera system" of
the iPhone 16e. This feels like a semantic distinction, since
the specs are identical, but the change may simply be that Apple
has unlocked the next-generation portrait mode - a feature that
was conspicuously missing from last year's model and really felt
like an artificial limitation more than anything else.

    6. Ceramic Shield 2: Apple has upgraded the iPhone 17e to use the
same glass as the iPhone 17, offering three times the scratch
    resistance and reduced glare.

    7. Soft Pink: The iPhone 16e came in basic black and white finishes.
These are still available for the iPhone 17e, but Apple has added
soft pink for those who would like a splash of color.

    The Surprises
While the iPhone 17e represents a nice upgrade for a budget phone,
there weren't any real surprises for the new features. Instead, we
were most surprised by some of the predictions or assumptions that
    didn't come to pass.

    1. No N1 Chip: Last fall, Apple followed up on its C1 modem chip
with the N1, a powerful new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip that
worked hand-in-glove with the A19 and iOS. While the C1X was
limited to the iPhone Air, the N1 came to the entire lineup,
and even showed up in the M5 iPad Pro in October. Many expected
that would make it a lock for the iPhone 17e, but it turns out
the budget model is still sporting the older third-party chipset,
likely the same one from the iPhone 16e, since it features the
same older Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 support, leaving it in the
same class as the 2023 iPhone 15.

    2. A Pricier Storage Bump: While it's great that Apple has increased
the base storage of the iPhone 17e to 256 GB, customers who want
to move up a notch will pay $200 more, as the 512 GB model sells
for $799. That's still $100 less than the 512 GB iPhone 16e, and
it's consistent with Apple's pricing tiers, but it's worth noting
that there's no longer a $699 middle ground here.

    3. The Notch Remains: Despite rumors that Apple would move to a
Dynamic Island for the iPhone 17e, the legacy notch is still
present on this year's model. To be fair, those rumors seemed to
settle into the pro-notch camp over the past few weeks, but it
seemed so odd that Apple would stick with a four-year-old user
    interface design.

    4. The Same Screen: The biggest clue as to why we still have a notch
is the fact that the iPhone 17e appears to be using the same
display panels as the iPhone 16e, which in turn came from the
iPhone 14 -athe last mainstream model to feature the notch. There
have been no changes in resolution or brightness, and we're left
to assume that either these panels are much more affordable to
continue producing, or that Apple still has a huge stockpile of
them from the iPhone 14 era.

    5. No Camera Control: If there were any doubts that Apple's new
Camera Control button is a higher-end feature, the iPhone 17e
puts those to rest. While MagSafe may have been a temporary bump
in the road, it's clear that Apple plans to reserve the
capacitive camera button for its mainstream iPhone models.

    6. The Same Battery Life: The iPhone 17e promises the same 26 hours
of video playback on a single charge as its predecessor (or 21
hours of streaming playback). That's somewhat understandable,
since even though the A19 is a more powerful chip, it's fighting
against a four-year-old 60Hz LTPS screen, which drains enough
power to turn the gains from the A19 into a rounding error. It's
also notable that Apple's specs focus on video playback, which is
all about that screen; we'll have to wait for some real-world
tests to see if there are improvements in other areas.

    Price and Availability
The iPhone 17e will be available for pre-order this Wednesday,
March 4, in black, white, and soft pink, starting at $599 for the
256 GB model. A 512 GB version is also available for $799. It's
expected to show up in stores on March 11.

The 17e is smaller than the 17 so would suit people who want smaller

Having that laughably crappy battery matters most in a few years time.
