• Get a new iPhone 12 mini battery or a newer iPhone model?

    From ant@ant@zimage.comANT (Ant) to misc.phone.mobile.iphone on Wed Jan 21 19:26:41 2026
    From Newsgroup: misc.phone.mobile.iphone

My iPhone 12 mini is slow and laggy with iOS v26.2, and gets hot and
drains battery fast when using it like in Duolingo app. I wonder if my
12 mini is too old these days and I should get a newer iPhone model, but they're all big after 13 mini (not worth getting since it will have the
same problem next year or so). DeviceMonitor^2 app shows CPU and RAM
usages almost at max. I really love the small physical sizes and lighter weight in minis. :( I wished Apple would make more newer minis, but they
won't since they didn't make a lot of money from them.

Since small screen is important for you, I would recommend an Phone 16 (not
pro version). This model is less than 1 inch larger than your 12 mini,
but has 8GB RAM and much faster CPU. I have a 16 Pro Max and it runs
26.2 just fine. I like the large screen.

But your post confirms my decision to not install 26 on my iPad Mini 5.
It is already slow enough on 18.7.3, and it has an older CPU than your 12
mini and only 3GB RAM. The iPhone 12 mini has 4GB RAM.

I only upgraded iOS to v26.2 because of security fixes I can't get in
v18 (missed v18.7.3 with its beta profile trick, but it is probably unsupported anyways).

18.7.3 is only available for iPhone XR and iPhone XS models. I have no

I won't be any smaller than the 16e. If you stick with iphone you're going
to get used to a bigger phone. Unless you get the iPhone Air, but that's a
lot of money for simply less battery.

13 has become slower and glitchier since installing 26. I thought it would
be temporary as things settle down, but no, it is longstanding.

On older phones it's just a resource hog for no good reason. I hope Apple revert some of the more resource requiring aspects in iOS 27.

There will certainly be more updates to iOS 18. Apple has a pretty good history of long term support. The iPad Air 2 got an update in September
2025 (15.8.5) and the Air 2 is an antique from 2014.

As I suspected. Old batteries generate more heat during charging and discharging than a new one. And OS updates always put more stress on components, including batteries. Your battery is likely the cause of
your performance issues. Time to replace it.

Since small screen is important for you, I would recommend an Phone 16 (not

    Wow, even 13 too? :(

I doubt it. Apple just wants us to buy newer iPhones. :P I wished Apple kept releasing newer iOS v18 like v18.7.4 and on for those who don't
want v26 in iPhones that can run v26. :(

There will certainly be more updates to iOS 18. Apple has a pretty good history of long term support. The iPad Air 2 got an update in September 2025 (15.8.5) and the Air 2 is an antique from 2014.

But Apple didn't give iPhones v18.7.3 (ignoring the beta profile trick
that they closed) for iPhones that can run v26. :(

Nah, your battery is significantly degraded and in need of replacement.

The question is spending $89 for its battery will make my iPhone fast
and smooth again? Even when my old iPhone is cool, recharged at 100%,
etc. it's slow with v26.2 with visual effects disabled. Am I going to
get faster speeds with a brand new genuine battery from Apple's retail
store? I don't want to waste $100 on the old iPhone if a new battery
    doesn't fix it.

Apple have built their reputation on creating great products backed up with great support. It's the support which people can justify in paying more for that over the competition. 6-7 years of full support on iphone is typical.
I would absolutely expect a 12 to get iOS 27.

If Apple start degrading that level of support, they degrade the customer experience and that will hit their bottom line.

I'm seeing similar to Ant with my 13 (battery health is much better than
his) as are many others which is indicative that Apple have profiled iOS 26
on older hardware badly. I previously had an XR which didn't suffer the
types of issues on newer iOS versions as we're seeing now.

The worst thing is that the (UI) changes in iOS 26 are *terrible*. No-one
has anything good to say about this version. I'm glad Preview has made it
to iOS, for example, but is buggy as hell.

My goodness! This is not an Apple marketing training session!
A short cross check revealed that iPhone 12 will probably get iOS 27.
After that it will be game over. A digital device with no support from

    20 months.
