• A modest proposal for Tahoe's user interface.

    From Chris Schram@chrispam1@me.com to comp.sys.mac.system on Fri Sep 19 21:49:39 2025
    From Newsgroup: comp.sys.mac.system

I upgraded to Tahoe when I was eventually able to free up the necessary bandwidth.

Most of my previous Appearance settings carried over from Sequoia, so I
was not subjected to the new glassy eye candy. But I must take issue with
many of the "rounded" interface elements, which are, at the very least. distracting.

Wide buttons, tabs and search boxes are too similar looking. I have enough experience with MacOS to know which is which, but the effect gets to be
pretty annoying. Also, rows of round buttons, such as in Safari pinned
    tabs, look just plain stupid.

I generally don't take issue with rounded window corners, but the radii of these is the same as the elements I mentioned above, and would look
    better if cut in half.

Aside from circle-crazy interface elements, I have been looking tor a way
to lighten the Dock's background color. I have Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast enabled, and I have found no way to make the Dock's background color a lighter gray.

Okay, so here's me, responsing: I hate the curvy corners. They are
ugly. But they aren't ugly enough for me to bother doing much, unless
there's a "turn of curves" switch inside the settings, which, if there
is, I can't find. And they are only "ugly" to my preferences because
they are different from the usual squared-off corners. I'll get used
to them. After thirty or forty years.

I can't find *anything* relating to the appearance of the Dock. I can
set it to disappear and that's about it. Mine is "transparent", I
think, so the "colour" isn't an issue. Mostly, it's been pale but I'e
only had Taco installed for a day or so so that may just be because of
    the choice of rotating wallpapers.

Apart from those, Taco seems to be about as cool and user-friendly as
the Cats and BigTree versions were. I just wish that just for once the marketing 'droids at Apple would chose something non-USAlien for their
names. It's a fucking *BIG* world out there and there are thousands of
other worlds, stars, galaxies and nebulae, they should buy an atlas
and some other books and get someone to read them to themselves.

Yes, I know, Apple are USAlien and they think that all of their
customers are USAlien, too so those customers, and Apple marketers,
wouldn't *understand* non-USAlien names but even a USAlien can
*learn*. They can use Apple's A.I. to ask what the fuck "Etna" is were
    that to be used.

I'm sure their "A.I." "Intelligence" Assistant has read about at
least a couple of places outside the USAlia. :)

    Maybe.

I agree with you, and the worst part is that when you split the screen, it doesnrCOt seem to use all the available screen real estate. Even with Preview and Microsoft Word split together, thererCOs a slight overlap, which I donrCOt remember happening in the previous version. Hopefully, IrCOll eventually learn to ignore it.

    <<snipped snippiness>>

Okay, so Taco is running on both boxes, MiniMac and Laptop, MBP. Both
are doing all the things. Both are running versions of Prime95. Both
    "just work".

It did take a while but I'm rather impressed by how easy the upgrades
were. I'm also quite impressed that my boxes both qualified for the
    upgrade.

It appears that the MBP's menu bar at the top of the screen is also transparent. That makes it difficult to read at times but it's a very,
    minor gripe.

Thank you, Apple, you do good work. :)

They call it "Liquid Glass" IIRC.

Here a bit of the propaganda:

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today previewed a beautiful new software
design that makes apps and system experiences more expressive and
delightful while being instantly familiar. ItrCOs crafted with a new

time, the new design extends across platforms rCo iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 261 rCo to establish even more harmony
while maintaining the distinct qualities that make each unique.

Right, yes, well, it's Apple so where *else* would it be, right?

I still want a rheostat bar control for the Dock and the Menu-bar

    Adieu

I had the same thought WRT Windows Vista, though I'm willing to at least entertain the notion that Microsoft flew too close to the sun all those
years ago (perhaps Windows Icarus would have been more fitting?)

I'm hopeful that Apple's direct relationship between hardware and
software means that this interface gets implemented in a much more
stable way. I just installed Tahoe and iPadOS 26 a short while ago and
I'm still getting used to the changes. I've kept my Mac pretty similar
to how I had it under Sequoia but I do like the Liquid Glass look on my
    iPad.

I think my only real gripe is the icon changes, especially our poor
Finder Guy. Might be my least favorite iteration, knocking the 10.0-10.2
icon out of its previously-held last place.

epileptic attacks because of this crap. In addition it is resource and
    energy hungry.

Do LCD and OLED screens still hurt people? I know C.R.T. ones used to
but I don't think anyone sells those any longer.

There are already press articles that claim that this nonsense causes >serious stomach sickness with some users.

    Right. :)

    Thank you.

The first thing I did after two days. I'm still not happy and I can
safely say that this "Glass Thing" is a total failure and a dead end.

    "Glass Thing"?

They call it "Liquid Glass" IIRC.

Here a bit of the propaganda:

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today previewed a beautiful new software
design that makes apps and system experiences more expressive and
delightful while being instantly familiar. ItrCOs crafted with a new
material called Liquid Glass. This translucent material reflects and
refracts its surroundings, while dynamically transforming to help bring
greater focus to content, delivering a new level of vitality across
controls, navigation, app icons, widgets, and more. For the very first
time, the new design extends across platforms rCo iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS >> Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 261 rCo to establish even more harmony
while maintaining the distinct qualities that make each unique.

    Oh. Cool. Thanks.

My machines don't have "Liquid Glass". One has a "Retina" display,
    the other possibly does not.

Those are two completely different things.

"Liquid Glass" is Apple's awful new software design for the look of the
icons, windows, menu bar, dock, etc. in their various OS 26
    implementations.

"Retina" is the Apple's name for the 4K or better display hardware used
on all current Macs with built-in screens.

Nonsense. It's fine, and Apple will improve it over time.

Microsoft failed with it 20 years ago. "Liquid Glass" is waste of time
    and resources.

    Sure, Jan. Efye

Wait a until you will find the first articles in the press about
epileptic attacks because of this crap. In addition it is resource and

    More nonsense.

You are a Troll and brain dead idiot who has absolutely no clue about
    iOS or macOS

    Projection.
