I do like Android and I like Apple as well.
A software engineer explained her perspective of the differences to me.

Apple focuses on one OS, plugs holes, supports it for a long time and it's basically
a single OS that does what it is supposed to do. The user does have to fall in line
and accept, for the most part, what Apple has chosen for them.

Android is like a person throwing spaghetti at the wall looking to see what will stick.
This is why buying a cheap Android phne vs a more expensive one may not be the best decision as support for the cheap phone may be limited.

If your particular phone sticks to the wall it will get support.
    If not you are SOL.

That pretty well sums it up for me. Finally got fed up with the
inconsistency of Android. Even within the Samsung "walled garden" line
of phones and tablets you had to be careful. Also, Samsung does not put
the resources into its tablet line that Apple does for the iPad. Tablet computing is a high priority for both my wife and I.
