Windows Server has the potential to be used in an Internet-facing
context, but barely. It's really just an intranet server OS, to any meaningful extent. Any serious server on the Internet would be running
    Linux or BSD.

NT 4 introduced me to the BSOD. It greeted me every Monday morning. I

A programmer friend of mine swore that 95 was more stable than 98, but I
found that 98SE was as good as it got in the 9x line. For what it's worth, Windows 95 never crashed if all the software installed on the machine was
    from Microsoft itself.

And then there was ME. iirc it ran out of 'resources' if you tried to do anything. I'm not sure but I think that was the box I put Mandrake on.

I'm reading that a bit differently than you. Azure's revenue comes from selling Windows Server licenses. Not too much revenue comes from DIY Linux installs.

I never looked at Azure but on AWS BYOB Linux instances are a hell of a
lot cheaper than Windows Server instances. Even ones like RHEL are
cheaper. Of course on AWS you're paying full list price; Azure has a
rather interesting sliding scale for Microsoft Windows licenses, being Microsoft after all.
