We see that even in Usenet... many who back what I repeatedly refer to as the tribalism and scapegoating. We
see that in the small, insignificant pond of Usenet, and we see it in the larger ocean of America.
Trump is a symptom of the disease. We have to find a way to reduce the impact of big money on politics. We have to reverse Citizens United. We should remove
the size limit from the House or otherwise find ways to make it more representative again. Even the Senate and the Electoral College -- these are essentially affirmative action for rural states. If every adult citizen in the
US could vote and have an equal say we would be MUCH better off, but for now we have those with the least electoral power (those in California) paying the most into the federal government, while those with the most electoral power (smaller states) getting the most from it. Look at Wyoming -- if you live there you have 20x the electoral power as someone in California.
Of course the bigger issue is just money. The idea of corporations being people and money being free speech makes no sense. If money is free speech, then in a trial a wealthy person can just hand each juror $1M of "free speech"
and be done with it. Utter insanity.
We need to fix these fundamental issues with our system, but those in power do
not hand it away. I do not know how this gets fixed.

rural states. If every adult citizen in the US could vote and have an
equal say we would be MUCH better off, but for now we have those with
the least electoral power (those in California) paying the most into
the federal government, while those with the most electoral power
(smaller states) getting the most from it. Look at Wyoming -- if you
live there you have 20x the electoral power as someone in California.
Of course the bigger issue is just money. The idea of corporations
being people and money being free speech makes no sense. If money is
free speech, then in a trial a wealthy person can just hand each juror
$1M of "free speech"
and be done with it. Utter insanity.
We need to fix these fundamental issues with our system, but those in
power do not hand it away. I do not know how this gets fixed.
