    Overall December 2025
    Windows 94.95%
    Linux 3.19%

Linux stalled at 3.20% in Nov 2025, and is now declining?

Give us a positive Linux spin on this, Larry Duh. You can do it!

    MS is doomed

It probably has a lot to do with the fact that Linux doesn't support the
games that require anti-cheat software to be installed and which go
through the TPM chip. Therefore, if you're into multiplayer, Windows is
    the only real destination.

However, I recall when you posted such stuff and Linux was at 2%.
Whether you like to admit it or not, 3% is still 1% more before. If
portable gaming becomes more important than it currently is, that number
is likely to jump to 5 or 6% since SteamOS is definitely a better option
than Windows 11 on portable devices and gamers have noticed. It's not
enough to bankrupt Microsoft, but it's a change in the right direction.

Maybe look at the actual figures?

    <https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey>

Looking at the breakdown by OS version, it says Linux overall gained
0.38% in December, while Windows actually dropped by 0.56%. (Windows
11 failing to gain as much as Windows 10 lost.)

Meanwhile, macOS gets left in the dust ... ?

I would imagine that these are some of the users with perfectly capable machines who are simply being locked out of Windows 11 because they
don't have a TPM chip. Their choice amounted to installing Windows 11
without said chip using a special installer made by Rufus (and risking
an eventual lockout by Microsoft through an update) or simply installing Linux. There are lots of videos calling for people to do the Linux thing
on YouTube, so there is a chance that even the most cautious Windows
user decided to at least give it a try. It can also be the people who
either opted for a Steam Deck or bought a competing machine and switched
    the OS to SteamOS.

Meanwhile, macOS gets left in the dust ... ?

MacOS has a pathetic library of games. When I still had a MacBook M1 and loaded up Steam, a very tiny amount of my almost 200 games were
available to play. It was mostly 2D titles and a few older 3D games. No
one who intends to play games should even consider a Mac.

IrCOve told you before, you really should check your facts before
    posting, shouldnrCOt you?

I don't know all the facts, but while I won't say that 2026 is the year
of the Linux desktop, it might be the year that longtime Windows users
get fed up of Microsoft's decisions. This won't necessarily be a win for
Linux as much as for Apple. Nevertheless, a lot of Linux distributions
today are quite mature and present a very polished desktop to those
Windows users who give it a try. It's quite possible that that great
first impression will turn a lot of longtime Windows users into
full-time converts, especially when they realize how much more
    responsive Linux is.

You want a positive spin? Simple: who cares about games? I'm glad
support for Windows games has gotten so good on Linux, it's a cool thing
in itself, but it's hardly central to Linux's potential growth.

You could assume that a similar proportion applies to desktop Linux

They have, and that is part of why it is important for people to reject an operating system they don't _need_ to run which promotes the very things
which will make technology increasingly unaffordable.

There have been quite a few articles on that fact. A simple trip to the computer store will confirm that. To give you an idea, a 2TB hard disk I bought at Walmart for around $80 a few years ago is now going for nearly
$200. Similarly, the Samsung 990 EVO 2TB I got about a year ago for $165
is now going for $265 around here. AI and cryptocurrency mining have made
RAM and GPUs prohibitively expensive. On the bright side, it means that
game companies will have no choice but to cater to those who have older hardware if they plan on selling their games.
