Jack Wallen has some handy tips for users of this Free Software app,
regardless of which platform yourCOre on <https://www.zdnet.com/article/new-to-gimp-10-tips-for-getting-the-most-from-this-free-image-editor/>.

Installing GrCOMIC is a fun one -- that has loads of amazing effects you
    can apply to images.

To his list, I would add two more tips, one I would consider
    intermediate and one advanced.

The intermediate tip is: learn to use other Free Software
content-creation tools in conjunction with GIMP. Too many users seem
to have the rCLAdobe PhotoshoprCY mentality, where they learn to do
everything in the one tool, even though there are others which are
better suited for certain tasks. Remember, with Free Software, there
is no extra monthly rental for adding more strings to your bow!

Suggestions for some other tools to learn about: Krita or MyPaint for
more artistic painting tools, and Inkscape for a vector-based, resolution-independent design approach. If yourCOre fond of faux-3D
effects, why not look at incorporating a true 3D app into the
workflow, to produce more authentic-looking effects, like Blender?
(OK, that may start to look like more of an rCLadvancedrCY than rCLintermediaterCY thing ...)

And the advanced tip is: learn a bit about using Python scripting and
shell scripting (if your OS supports it) to automate tasks in these
apps. Unlike Adobe products, there is no hard-and-fast boundary
between basic, limited and clunky rCLautomationrCY facilities and more
advanced rCLpluginrCY development: Free Software tools support a
continuous range of functionality across the whole spectrum. This way,
you can start simple and progress to more advanced functions, limited
only by your own abilities and patience.

Oh, and I guess another intermediate tip comes to mind, for the more artistically-oriented: if you wish for a more naturalistic drawing
style, like with pens/pencils/etc on paper, why not get a
pressure-sensitive drawing tablet? All the apps named above will
    support it.
