  • Jeff challenges Derek Hough to do Survivor (video)

    Derek Hough has something to do with DWTS. Apparently Boston Rob asked
    him if he would ever do Survivor. He said he would if Boston Rob does
    DWTS. Now Jeff is challenging Derek. To me it sounds like Jeff is
    guaranteeing him a spot in either S51 or S52.

    I have seen Derek on DWTS and see absolutely nothing that would suggest
    he'd be effective on Survivor. If he comes in as the lone celeb a la
    Jimmy Johnson or any of those athletes like Jeff Kent, I don't see him sticking around long if he is recognized.

    He was part of the show for several years as one of the pro dancers who partner with the celebs. He is a great dancer and can surely do very
    well in the physical challenges. But I'm pretty sure he'd be recognized quickly and I can't see him sticking around. His sister Julianne is
    also a pro dancer who has worked on the show, currently as a judge.

    They are not going to filter out the cast to prevent one B-list celeb
    from being recognized. And even at that, Derek Hough is probably much
    more recognizable today than Mike White was when he did Survivor. When
    Mike White was on Survivor, I did not recognize him except from his time
    on Amazing Race when he raced with his dad. He was definitely not as well-known then as Derek Hough, who appeared on a top-rated ABC reality
    show for several seasons, is today.

    I would look at differently. How likely is it for a Survivor fan to have watched TAR compared to DWTS? When Mike raced with his dad, TAR seemed
    pretty big back then. I remembered him from TAR. If it wasn't for his
    Survivor appearance I would have not known about The White Lotus until
    this past summer when BB27 did a very controversial twist called The
    White Locust.

    That's a fair point that Survivor fans are more likely to watch TAR than
    DWTS. But Derek Hough has been on DWTS for more than 15 years and has
    also appeared on numerous other shows, including as an actor. I think
    he is probably generally well-known to many TV viewers. As an example,
    I remember watching him in a recurring role on Nashville for a few
    seasons. He has also won numerous Emmys in the choreography category. I
    just think he is too well known to be a part of the Survivor cast with
    no one recognizing him.

    We're not talking about Lisa Whelchel who had been off TV for so long
    that none of her younger teammates recognized her. This guy has been on
    TV regularly for nearly 20 years and I believe has been announced as the
    new host on Extra.
