• Steven confirms the buoy never moved

Steven confirmed what many of us suspected, which is that he was never
in any danger of the clock running out on that island challenge. The key phrase is:

"The only thing I can concretely tell you is that that buoy did not
move. The tide had not risen at all. When I came back around, I was
    shocked."

Despite the frenetic way Steven ran this and describes it, I think it's
pretty clear the challenge must have gone much quicker than he and the
show admit. Either that, or the show really screwed up in its
calculation of when the tide would rise.

In a way, it reminds me of when they ran the Last Gasp challenge a few
seasons back and the the players basically outlasted the tide and broke
the challenge. Maybe the show need to hire better interns to check the
tide charts for these kind of challenges.

I know everything looked the same to me when he finished. The show hires hundreds of locals--maybe they should hire their tide experts to work on
    water challenges.

I see in the section of the article on the Journey that Steven confirms
it was dangerous. He also says he wears hearing aids. Was I sleeping
during part of the premiere because I don't remember this being mentioned.

The only time I walked was when I was in the water and physically
couldn't move, and I had my hearing aids in. I wish I had taken those
out in hindsight before I went on this, but I couldn't swim through the
water through those portions. I had to tread through because I didn't
want to damage them. I was killing myself out there. I was sliding off
rocks. There was a moment where I was scaling up this wall and I looked
down and I was like, "I don't think this is the way I was supposed to
go, because if I fall, I'm literally gonna die." So I scaled my way
back. I was like, Spider-Man, dude. I was going crazy out there. I think
there were some people on Reddit who maybe mapped it out? I haven't
looked at that yet. But it felt like forever, man. It was crazy.

Yeah, he talked about it in his very first scene with his tribe. I
think it was Kristina who asked him about it and he told the story of
his hearing loss. I'm pretty sure it was never mentioned after that
    first scene.

they spent so much time on that stuff and Shannon's spirituality
sessions given how good the game has turned out. I wish they had spent
more time showing us how Rizo and Savannah's relationship formed and why
it's so strong, and how they connected/bonded so strongly with Sophi
    when they adopted her.

Agree. The editing this season has really been uneven. While Savannah
is arguably the most dominant player and the star of the season, we
really didn't see too much of Rizo until post-merge and it's only the
last few episodes where he has started to come on like gangbusters.

True, but we are only at final five and we have a couple more ICs, a fire-making challenge and multiple TCs - so there's still more
opportunity for Rizo to show his stuff. Personally, I think if he makes
it to F3 and gets some votes and doesn't come in third, he will have
    lived up to the hype.

Yeah, he talked about it in his very first scene with his tribe. >>>>>>> I think it was Kristina who asked him about it and he told the

    mentioned after that first scene.

I just watched the scene. Matt was there when he told Kristina his >>>>>> story. As soon as he mentioned the part about wondering how many

Wow, I don't even remember that part.-a I thought Sage and her tribe >>>>> had the market on body function jokes.

They had the most farting and peeing footage but not a monopoly on

spirituality sessions given how good the game has turned out. I wish
they had spent more time showing us how Rizo and Savannah's
relationship formed and why it's so strong, and how they connected/
bonded so strongly with Sophi when they adopted her.

Agree.-a The editing this season has really been uneven.-a While
Savannah is arguably the most dominant player and the star of the
season, we really didn't see too much of Rizo until post-merge and
it's only the last few episodes where he has started to come on like
    gangbusters.

He's gotten a lot better but still hasn't lived up to the preseason hype.

True, but we are only at final five and we have a couple more ICs, a fire-making challenge and multiple TCs - so there's still more
opportunity for Rizo to show his stuff.-a Personally, I think if he makes
it to F3 and gets some votes and doesn't come in third, he will have
    lived up to the hype.

Someone who bills himself as "the man, the myth, the legend," needs to
either win or a lose in a controversial tie to live to the hype as far
    as I'm concerned.

Sounds like he was using that "the man, the myth, the legend" mantra
long before doing Survivor. So for a tough boy blowhard from New York
to actually play a decent strategic game, make it to the final episode
and potentially the final three, and also be brought back for an
all-star season - is not nothing. If you think about it, he's one of
only a handful of players to play back-to-back seasons.

He might be the most entertaining and different from the other men not
chosen. I presume they wouldn't want another winner, so that would rule
out Gabler and Yam Yam, not that I really would want to see either of
them again. They've got Charlie and Q. I assume Jessie wouldn't be available. Off-hand, I can't really think of a better choice than Rizo
to fill that slot other than Sam, maybe. And between Sam and Rizo, they probably would say Riz is better television. Also, Sam got pretty
shellacked in the final vote, losing something like 7-1 to Rachel. I'm guessing if Rizo gets to F3 he may get more than one vote.

Also, I really think Riz earned a lot of points for the way he said to
Jeff "Welcome to Survivor" that day Jeff was feeling the heat. I think
Jeff likes players who will speak up like that. If it came down to Rizo
or Sam for that last spot, that comment by Riz may have sealed the deal.

Yeah, he talked about it in his very first scene with his >>>>>>>>>>>> tribe. I think it was Kristina who asked him about it and he >>>>>>>>>>>> told the story of his hearing loss.-a I'm pretty sure it was >>>>>>>>>>>> never mentioned after that first scene.

I just watched the scene. Matt was there when he told
Kristina his story. As soon as he mentioned the part about >>>>>>>>>>> wondering how many farts he didn't get away with I recalled >>>>>>>>>>> seeing the scene. lol

Wow, I don't even remember that part.-a I thought Sage and her >>>>>>>>>> tribe had the market on body function jokes.

Agree.-a The editing this season has really been uneven.-a While >>>>>>>> Savannah is arguably the most dominant player and the star of >>>>>>>> the season, we really didn't see too much of Rizo until
post-merge and it's only the last few episodes where he has
started to come on like gangbusters.

He's gotten a lot better but still hasn't lived up to the
    preseason hype.

True, but we are only at final five and we have a couple more ICs, >>>>>> a fire-making challenge and multiple TCs - so there's still more
opportunity for Rizo to show his stuff.-a Personally, I think if he >>>>>> makes it to F3 and gets some votes and doesn't come in third, he
will have lived up to the hype.

Someone who bills himself as "the man, the myth, the legend," needs >>>>> to either win or a lose in a controversial tie to live to the hype
    as far as I'm concerned.

Sounds like he was using that "the man, the myth, the legend" mantra
long before doing Survivor.-a So for a tough boy blowhard from New
York to actually play a decent strategic game, make it to the final
episode and potentially the final three, and also be brought back
for an all- star season - is not nothing.-a If you think about it,
he's one of only a handful of players to play back-to-back seasons.

That's true. You still have to factor in that by choosing Savannah to
play in S50 that they needed another New Era male to balance things
out. Is Rizo the best New Era male of the players not chosen?

He might be the most entertaining and different from the other men not
chosen.-a I presume they wouldn't want another winner, so that would
rule out Gabler and Yam Yam, not that I really would want to see
either of them again.-a They've got Charlie and Q.-a I assume Jessie
    wouldn't be available.-a Off-hand, I can't really think of a better
choice than Rizo to fill that slot other than Sam, maybe.-a And between
Sam and Rizo, they probably would say Riz is better television.-a Also,
Sam got pretty shellacked in the final vote, losing something like 7-1
to Rachel.-a I'm guessing if Rizo gets to F3 he may get more than one
    vote.

Sam is someone whom I'm surprised didn't get chosen assuming he was available. I would have picked him over Joe. I'm pretty sure Jessie said
he was cut. Rizo's definitely entertaining and interesting. Those two attributes seem to have been why they chose Q. Rizo's also a very good strategic player.

I think they took Joe because he was the centerpiece of all the drama
with Eva. I do agree with you that Sam would have been a better choice.
I can easily see Joe dragged to the end as another zero-vote
    third-place finisher.

Regarding Jesse, he seemed bitter about not being chosen, and I just get
the impression he doesn't come across as loving the game the way Jeff
would like. Jeff wants players who embrace the game and come across as
really enjoying themselves when they play. Jesse comes across as very
serious and almost somber in the way he plays, and he even looks that
way in his pictures. I could be wrong, but I just don't think Jeff
likes players who are that overly cerebral unless they also have a fun side.

And to that point, he already has a PhD in the cast - Christian Hubicki
    - and I think of the two, Christian is much more accessible.

Also, I really think Riz earned a lot of points for the way he said to
Jeff "Welcome to Survivor" that day Jeff was feeling the heat.-a I
think Jeff likes players who will speak up like that.-a If it came down
to Rizo or Sam for that last spot, that comment by Riz may have sealed
    the deal.

I thought Jeff looked pissed off when he said that.

No, if he were pissed, they wouldn't have shown it. And if he really
didn't like Riz's attitude, he wouldn't have chosen him for S50. Jeff
is first and foremost a TV producer, and I think he likes players who
can think on their feet and come up with quick ad libs like that. I
think that's one of the reasons he likes Emily and brought her back.

Jeff might be trying to connect more with fans, especially younger ones.
I think that's why we were shown Rizo's smartass comment, Savannah
calling him "dude," and Sophi refusing to imitate him. In the past, if
Jeff asked a player to imitate him they would have done it regardless of
    how uncomfortable they felt.
