FoxNews Live :
The NTSB has issued its official reason for
the gigantic cargo plane crash there last year.
It said there were signs of metal fatigue and
cracking on the engine mounts. When the crew
goosed it for take-off, the engine snapped off.
Metal fatigue has been the base cause of many
plane crashes and serious incidents. Aluminum
alloys are more prone to cracking than steel,
though you wouldn't build a steel airplane.
Some stiff plastics, like those used in more
modern 'composite' construction, may also be
prone to vibration fatigue. In theory a network
of glass fibers could be incorporated - cracks
would cause them to crack, potentially providing
a warning system.
