Donald Trump has announced the US will build a rCLgolden fleetrCY
of the rCLlargest battleships in the history of the worldrCY in
an effort to maintain military supremacy.

Speaking to reporters from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida,
Mr Trump said the new ships would be rCL100 times more powerful
than any battleship ever builtrCY and would rCLinspire fear in
AmericarCOs enemies all over the worldrCY.

The US president said they would immediately begin making
two ships, with the goal to ramp up production to build a
fleet of between 20 and 25.

rCLEach one of these will be the largest battleship in the
history of our country, the largest battleship in the history
of the world ever built,rCY he said.

rCLTheyrCOll help maintain American military supremacy, revive
the American ship building industry, and inspire fear in
AmericarCOs enemies all over the world,rCY he added.

Mr Trump said the battleships would be built with the help
    of rCLrobotsrCY and artificial intelligence.

    . . .

SOUNDS great - but it's exactly the WRONG tact.

First off, can't be ready nearly in time for China.

    Second, China's now-superior tech - including
    AI-augmented hypersonic missiles and "smart"
torpedoes and lots and lots of attack drones
can send these things to the bottom in just
a few minutes. Huge ship = huge investment
    that is DOOMED.

The future - naval and aeronautic - is in LOTS
and LOTS of small deadly things. "Nest of hornets".
Think 100 quick low-profile little drone carriers
instead of some 900 foot Big Easy Target.

I speak the Truth here. Admirals and generals and
defense contractors will NOT want to hear it.

If you want a good hint of the 'future of warfare',
bummer but it IS gonna happen, look to Ukraine.
Never have so few done so much with so little.
    Clever, innovative, counter-superpower on a
    shoestring budget.

News the other day (BBC) ... Ukraine needed some
FLIR imagers for Russian drone interceptors. The
'allies' weren't interested in helping them, said
their plan was stupid. SO ... they just ordered
a bunch on AliBaba - and the new drone interceptors
HAVE been successful, much improved range/accuracy.

Oh ... Trump ... naming a whole class of ships
after HIMSELF ... kinda too much EGO there. Yea
yea, he loves to put his name on everything :-)

Worthy people to name ships/classes after should EARN
    that rep, in historical retrospect.

I watched a few congressional hearings in the earlier part of the year,
navy budget amongst them. I got the impression they wanted a lot of
    additions, but especially more submarines

I watched a few congressional hearings in the earlier part of the year,
navy budget amongst them. I got the impression they wanted a lot of additions, but especially more submarines

Subs are useful - and theoretically harder for an
    enemy to get at.

"Theoretically" ... an "AI" might be taught to discern
subtle clues as to a subs location and direct torpedoes
towards it. This would be a step above conventional
'automation', towards "smart". Note also that moving
subs DO leave trails - they disturb water as they move
and that creates thermal sigs you can see from space,
magnetic effects, causes the sea life to make noises,
even chemical effects and a very slight 'hump' at
    the surface.

I've seen claims that modern tech CAN spot those.
As such the 'stealth' factor may only apply to
    2nd/3rd-world opponents.

In the rapidly evolving situation, I still think the
'angry hornets/killer-bees' model will serve better
in the future. Lots of small, often autonomous,
ships bearing missiles and drones and sometimes
torpedoes. Losing a few does not compromise the
attack force very much and they're cheap and quick
    to replace.
