An engine propelling a United flight lost power after taking
off from Dulles International Airport in Washington on
Saturday afternoon.
United Airlines Flight 803 was forced to return to Virginia
after taking off en route to Tokyo around 12.20pm EST,
according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Debris fell from the Boeing aircraft after takeoff, sparking
a brush fire and prompting emergency authorities to swoop
in on the airport.
'We've had a United 777 losing engine on departure runway
one center,' an air traffic controller said over the radio
system.
The controller added that the plane was about four miles north
of the field and would be returning to the runway.
'Roll the trucks and get them ready,' the controller added.
A few minutes later, the air traffic controller repeated:
'This is the tower again... he's lost an engine. He's
looping around.'
There were 275 passengers and 15 crew members on board.
United is scheduling a different aircraft to carry out
the rest of Saturday's flights.
. . .
THIS plane managed to survive long enough to land.
Note that the 777 is not an MD-11 ... completely
different manufacturer. YET, *two* cases of
complete engine separation on takeoff in barely
a month.
Now ... well ... we have to insert the possibility
of something deliberate happening here, sabotage
by the same method.
