President Donald Trump announced Friday he has approved
the manufacturing of "tiny cars" in the U.S.
In a morning Truth Social post, Trump said he had "just
approved TINY CARS to be built in America," calling them
"inexpensive, safe, fuel efficient and, quite simply,
AMAZING!!!"
He said the vehicles can be powered by "gasoline, electric,
or hybrid" and urged manufacturers, "START BUILDING THEM NOW!"
Trump also thanked the Justice Department and the departments
of Transportation and Environment.
The announcement fits a broader Trump second-term push to
reorient federal policy around consumer choice, affordability,
and restoring U.S. manufacturing, especially after years of
regulatory pressure that critics say helped drive sticker
prices higher and narrowed the market toward expensive electric
vehicles and larger vehicles.
. . .
Some are just ugly, cubes, while others are kind
of nice looking. The binding factor is that they
are VERY small and have small engines. Forget the
interstates.
"Tiny" cars are almost uniformly banned in the
USA because their top speeds are low and they
may not meet impact-resistance standards. "Tinys"
may be gasoline, hybrid or EV.
For some things you need an F-450 or giant SUV,
but for around-town uses something small might
be perfectly OK.
A big advantage in 'tiny cars' is that they tend
to be a third cheaper than more typical US road
vehicles. Disposable income ... well ... that's
been going down since Joe ..... retailers ARE
feeling it. As "AI" sucks up more 'people jobs'
the situation will become worse. Not sure Trump
or anybody can DO much about it short of sending
B-2s to blast AI data centers.
The tiniest car I've ever seen is the Brit "Peel P50".
Some BBC guy once did a mini-doc where he drove it
to work - and then actually INTO the BBC office
building, including the elevator. Alas those are
just TOO tiny ... most road drivers wouldn't even
see them. Splat !
"Safety" - iron is cheap in the USA, so add side
rails and bumpers kinda like a leaf-spring with two
inches of 'tire rubber' over them.
