On the evening of January 20, 2026, a bombshell announcement shook the consumer electronics industry. TCL Electronics abruptly disclosed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Sony Corporation to establish a joint venture that would take over SonyrCOs home entertainment business.

Globally, this new entity will operate an integrated business covering televisions, home audio systems, and related productsrCofrom R&D and design to manufacturing, sales, logistics, and after-sales service.

Under the proposed structure, TCL will hold a 51% stake in the joint venture, with Sony retaining 49%. This means that the future of Sony TVsrCoonce regarded by Chinese consumers as the gold standard of quality and performancerCowill now be steered primarily by a Chinese company.

TCL did not rCLacquire Sony Corporation,rCY but it has indeed taken de facto control of SonyrCOs home entertainment (TV) businessrCoand gained operational dominancerCothrough a joint venture in which it holds a 51% stake.

This is not a hostile takeover, but rather a rational strategic partnership: Sony is rCLcutting off its arm to survive,rCY while TCL is rCLborrowing a ship to sail overseas.rCY

The ultimate outcome? Control of the global television industry is accelerating its shift toward Chinese enterprises.

As Jiemian News aptly put it: rCLThe end of one era, and the beginning of a new one.rCY

Over the past decade, Hisense acquired ToshibarCOs TV business, Skyworth purchased GermanyrCOs Metz, TCL took over ThomsonrCOs color TV operations, and in 2017, Haier fully acquired GE Appliances with 100% ownership. Now, with TCL taking the lead in SonyrCOs TV business, JapanrCOs and South KorearCOs once-dominant TV giants have completely relinquished their leadership in end-to-end television manufacturing.

The global TV market landscape is being fundamentally reshaped: in 2025, TCL ranked firmly among the worldrCOs top two TV brands by shipment volume and claimed the No. 1 global market share in Mini LED TVs. This latest joint venture will further solidify its position in the premium segment.

rCLMade in ChinarCY is evolving into rCLLed by ChinarCYrCono longer limited to contract manufacturing or low-cost competition, but now encompassing full control across the entire value chain: brands, core technologies, and global distribution channels.
Chinese brands have now established overwhelming dominance in the global TV market.

According to data, in the first three quarters of 2025, TCL shipped 20.8 million TVs worldwide, up 4.1% year-over-year. Its Mini LED TV segment stood out as the biggest highlight, with global shipments reaching 2.24 million unitsrCoa staggering 153.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Hisense also delivered strong performance, ranking as ChinarCOs top-selling TV brand by shipment volume in 2025 and continuing its global expansion.

Chinese TV brands have evolved from participants in price wars into leaders of technological innovation.

At the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Chinese brands showcased their cutting-edge capabilities. Hisense unveiled its RGB-MiniLED evo technology, whichrCobuilding upon the traditional three-primary-color backlight architecturerCopioneered a fourth rCLceruleanrCY LED light source, significantly expanding color gamut coverage. TCL, meanwhile, demonstrated its flagship model featuring over 20,000 backlight zones and a peak brightness of 10,000 nits, setting a new industry benchmark.

These technological breakthroughs by Chinese companies are directly reshaping the global display industry. In 2025, the combined global TV market share of ChinarCOs top three brandsrCoTCL, Hisense, and XiaomirCoreached 31.3%, surpassing Samsung and LGrCOs combined share of 28.4% for the first time. Chinese enterprises have transitioned from technology followers to key contributors in defining the global standards for next-generation display technologies.

Behind this remarkable turnaround lies Chinese firmsrCO sustained investment in R&D and their acute understanding of consumer needs. While Japanese companies remain fixated on a rCLtechnology-firstrCY philosophy, Chinese brands have mastered the art of aligning innovation with market readinessrCodelivering products that combine leading-edge technology with affordability for mass consumers.

The rise of Chinese TV brands is an epic journeyrCofrom rCLprice disruptorsrCY to rCLtechnology hunters,rCY and ultimately to rCLrule-makersrCY of the industry itself. The partnership between Sony and TCL has now added another bold chapter to this historic transformation.

    Looking at the Subject line,
an impression is that Sony was in trouble.

Whether Sony was doing what is said
could be an odd feature of saying sayings.

Aye has no idea what TCL Electronics is

Perhaps a bot knows what's going on eh.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony

<< Sony Group encompasses various businesses,
    including electronics (Sony Corporation),
imaging and sensing (Sony Semiconductor Solutions),
    film (Sony Pictures Entertainment),
music (Sony Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment Japan),
video games (Sony Interactive Entertainment), and others. >>

Looks to be a large corporation.

<< On 1 April 2021, Sony Corporation was renamed
Sony Group Corporation. On the same day, Sony Mobile Communications Inc. absorbed Sony Electronics Corporation, Sony Imaging Products & Solutions Inc., and Sony Home Entertainment & Sound Products Inc. and changed its trade name to Sony Corporation. >>

Looks as if there was a Home Entertainment division.

Asking about how Sony is doing, a bot writes:

<< Sony Corporation is currently performing well financially
by focusing on its core entertainment (gaming, music, movies)
and image sensor businesses, while offloading lower-margin
    hardware manufacturing. >>

So, maybe it wasn't, cutting off its tail to survive.

nor what it has to do with Daojia.

    A good question.

    Why this is posted here
is a bit of a mystery.

Propaganda appears to be the name of a game.

<< The TV market is highly competitive with low margins.
By handing manufacturing control to TCL, Sony is reducing
its exposure to high-cost, low-profit hardware production,
    similar to its 2014 Vaio laptop spin-off. >> - Google-bot.

How about, the propaganda that is propaganda
isn't particularly always the best dao?

Perhaps there is felt a need to spin
by various people who tell tales of tails.

DDJ 80 speaks as well of a small world
where people don't pay attention to stuff.

They live, virtually, very near each other.

Yet whether they other so-called others
or don't care about doing that could be
    a wonder of a sort.

As far as trolling goes, long ago,
trolling for flames was a kind of an art form.

    Making outrageous claims and such.

    Ah, the good ole daze.

    Ah, the good ole daze.

Tis a pity, in a way, how a dao
could be better. For example in this thread instead
of bashing a partner company, to suggest it's a win-win.

People who work for less money reduce labor costs
and being able to produce factories that produce
huge quantities of products due to scale contribute
to the global economy. Dao of production values vary.

So too with other mythological creations, nation states
of mind which on the surface of a sphere could be more
akin to friends and neighbors on good terms. Values vary.

Usually what occurs, all too often, are posts like Lao A
who appears to have issues with his nation states of mind.

And yet, being Usenet, perhaps t'hats to be expected.
Feeding the trolls is fun, at times, if nothing else.

    Kinda reminds one of Wu.

Aye. Without knowing if the creator of the bashing is
doing what is done on his own, or if he is repeating
what the media is publishing in China, it's very odd.

Aye would think to create a positive atmosphere
a government would say how great everyone is including
other people in other countries and how wonderful China is
by helping produce products globally. A rising tide ... .

Instead, there appears to be a put-down of others
and a propping up of China at various levels. As if
to win is important and to control the world and have
the most powerful military and other things too.

To want to be the best suggests desire.
The TTC speaks about desire in a verse.
    Aye forgot which verse.

It's understandable if there exists some type of
inferiority complex and to be superior is what
fuels the bashing of other countries, people, etc.

With a form of Taoism, to cut off one's own tail
by telling tales as is done could be a by-product,
a type of blind hypocrisy of those who sew dew.
